As part of the State Farm Celebrate My Drive program, the company is teaming up with The Band Perry to encourage safe driving in high schools across the U.S. and Canada. Last year more than 6.3 million safe driving commitments were made through this program. Celebrate My Drive promotes responsible driving practices like 2N2: 2 eyes on the road and 2 hands on the wheel.

“We have such great memories of when we first got our driver’s licenses and we love that Celebrate My Drive is such a positive program that supports new teen drivers,” said members of The Band Perry. “Teen driver safety continues to be a major issue, and this program gives us a platform to spread the word and encourage safe driving in teens’ first years behind the wheel. It’s a privilege to partner with State Farm to shed light on this important issue and hopefully help save lives.”

Starting today through Oct. 7, administrators at U.S. and Canadian high schools can go to www.celebratemydrive.com to register to participate in the celebration. Teens and community members can commit to safe driving once a day every day from October 15-24 in support of their favorite high school. Two grand prize winning schools will receive a private concert from The Band Perry. The 100 high schools with the most online safe driving commitments will win a grant award of $25,000 or $100,000.

“Getting a driver’s license is a major milestone in a young adult’s life, and The Band Perry is the perfect partner to help celebrate it,” said Leif Roll, Marketing Vice President for State Farm. “Teens, in particular, connect with music in a major way, so it only makes sense to partner with one of the biggest acts in music to celebrate this new generation of teen drivers. As a leader in auto safety, we feel Celebrate My Drive has proved to be a positive way to help educate teens and their parents about teen driver safety.”

The Celebrate My Drive program engages teens and the adults who influence them to have supportive and positive conversations about safe driving. Sadly, for more than 30 years car crashes have been the leading cause of teen deaths.

BoConcept Miami, A Danish Furniture Design Store, Announces “Cash For Your Couch” Summer Campaign To Benefit Chapman Partnership

MIAMI, July 31, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — BoConcept Miami, a Danish furniture design store, announces its summer campaign, “Cash for Your Couch” to benefit Chapman Partnership through August 31st.

This summer, renewing your living room is worth a lot more. BoConcept has joined Chapman Partnership to help less fortunate families furnish their new space and everyone can be part of it. Customers can receive UP TO $1,000 to use towards a new sofa when they bring in pictures of their old couch for an appraisal. And BoConcept will take care of delivering the old couch to its new home at Chapman!

BoConcept is a worldwide brand, but we are new to South Florida. When we opened the doors to our Brickell showroom last October, we knew that one of the things we wanted was to be community minded. For months we have been looking at local charities that we could partner with and Chapman Partnership was just the perfect fit for us,” said Carlos Rojas, BoConcept Miami franchisee. “What we do best is furniture so when we learned that Chapman helps find stable housing for those who have been less fortunate, we wanted to create a program that we could really help with.

When a family is ready to move on from Chapman Partnership and live independently, there are many things they need, including furniture and household items. “Chapman Partnership is honored to partner with BoConcept on their summer promotion in helping our residents with furniture items such as sofas as they move out on their own. These are the items that make a house a home,” said Grace Ugalde-Wolpert, Chapman Partnership Community Outreach Manager.

BoConcept offers customized, coordinated and affordable design furniture and accessories. Their products are customized, because they can be fitted to the needs and dreams of their customers through the in-home consultation program. They are coordinated because they take a holistic approach in the development and design of their product range for all spaces. They include design because they are a design company with their own designers. And they are affordable because they want to spoil their customers by giving them great value.

The two organizations will be providing key opportunities for Latinos to develop into the U.S.’s future leaders of character at the 2014 Annual ALPFA Convention, Aug. 2 – 5, in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Over the past four years, MassMutual and ALPFA have worked together to help an exploding number of Latino small business owners and families make good financial decisions for a more secure future. Lorie Valle-Yanez, Chief Diversity Officer at MassMutual and member of the national Women of ALPFA Corporate Advisory Board, added, “We recognize the rich talent in ALPFA’s membership and MassMutual looks forward to becoming an employer-of-choice for its members.” MassMutual will host Booth #309 at the Convention Career Fair & University Expo on Aug. 5, and invites ALPFA members to stop by and learn more about career opportunities.

“ALPFA’s 42-year mission is to create lifelong professional opportunities for its members and business partners,” said Charlie P. Garcia, who was named Chief Executive Officer of ALPFA just over two months ago. “Our work with MassMutual both at this convention and throughout the year helps ALPFA meet that mission to develop young Latino professionals into leaders of character, which is so closely linked to the strength of America’s future economy.”

MassMutual leaders who will participate in and be available for interviews at the Convention include:

Blue Moon’s Cinnamon Horchata Ale was created by Keith Villa, founder and head brewmaster at Blue Moon Brewing Company. Villa sought inspiration from his Mexican heritage to create the unfiltered ale that delivers a clean cinnamon flavor. The brew starts out slightly sweet, ends slowly with residual cinnamon spice and is 5.5 percent alcohol by volume (ABV).

“Growing up in a Mexican family, I had Horchata all the time when I was young, but then I rediscovered it in recent trips to Latin America,” said Keith Villa. “I wanted to develop a brew for adults that combined the refreshing and creamy attributes of the traditional Horchata, so I’m beyond pleased that we finally made it a reality. It brings me great pride to introduce this brew into the market.”

Villa earned his Ph.D. in brewing from the University of Brussels in Belgium, an honor only a handful of brewers have achieved. Villa came back stateside and founded Blue Moon Brewing Company in 1995 to craft beers inspired by Belgian styles. His first interpretation turned out to be the brewer’s most popular beer, Blue Moon Belgian White, Belgian Style Wheat Ale. Since then, he has brewed several award-winning beers and continues to play an active role in creating new beers for the brewery. The new Blue Moon Cinnamon Horchata Ale is his latest creation and one inspired by his heritage.

Cinnamon Horchata Ale will be part of the Blue Moon line up, which includes Blue Moon Belgian White, the #1 craft beer in America. Blue Moon Belgian White is artfully crafted with Valencia orange peel for a subtle sweetness, coriander for a hint of spice, and oats for a creamy texture.

Cinnamon Horchata Ale will be included in the Blue Moon fall and winter brewmaster sampler packs, which will be available nationwide. A limited supply of the new Blue Moon Cinnamon Horchata Ale will be available in 6-packs starting Aug. 1 in select cities in Texas, California, New York and Colorado.

Former Marine and Self-Described ‘Proud Mexican American’ Finally Finds His Way to Career of His Dreams

Silva to be honored along with 79 of his fellow classmates at KGI School of Pharmacy White Coat Ceremony on August 23

CLAREMONT, Calif., July 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Pharmacy is not Antonio Silva’s first career, but he is certain it will be his last. In the past, the 34-year-old Riverside, California, resident has served in the U.S. Marine Corps and owned and operated his own small business. However, he could never forget what he was really passionate about―science, medicine and, most importantly, helping sick people feel better.

“My uncle is diabetic,” explains Silva, who describes himself as a “proud Mexican American.” “When I was younger, I would translate for him, explain what the doctors and nurses were saying, and help him get the tools and resources that he needed to manage his diabetes.”

But, despite his growing interest in health care, Silva chose to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps and then follow in his father’s footsteps as a small business owner in the transportation industry.

“My dad really pushed the business end,” Silva says. “We clashed a lot when I was I younger because he had a set plan for me. The business and home, everything was very close together, and he couldn’t understand why I was interested in something different.”

It was Silva’s mother, Norma Alvarez, who finally convinced him that it was time to make a change and do what he really wanted with his life. She had recently been diagnosed as pre-diabetic and got a lot of valuable information about how to manage the condition from her local pharmacist.

And, next month, despite the delay, Silva will take part in a White Coat Ceremony (WCC) recognizing him as a member of the founding class of the KGI School of Pharmacy. Students entering a four-year PharmD program traditionally receive white coats ― a symbol of clinical service and care ― to welcome them into the profession as colleagues dedicated to patient care.

“This is a very exciting time to be entering the pharmacy field,” KGI President Sheldon Schuster said. “PharmDs are breaking into new areas of practice in industry and regulatory affairs and, at the same time, many PharmDs are playing a much greater role in direct patient care.”

In addition to President Schuster and School of Pharmacy Dean Dr. Kathy Webster, speakers at the ceremony will include state Senator Ed Hernandez (D-West Covina), sponsor of a bill expanding pharmacy practice (SB 493) in California, John Roth, CEO of the California Pharmacists Association, KGI Board Chairman Robert Curry, and KGI Trustee and former CEO of Amylin Pharmaceuticals Daniel Bradbury. Dr. Arcelia Johnson-Fanin, founding dean of the Fiek School of Pharmacy at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, will be the featured speaker.

“While this is a wonderful time for the profession, we also know that there are many new schools of pharmacy that have opened recently or are about to open,” Dean Webster said. “So we are extremely focused on developing a program that will put our graduates at the leading edge of pharmacogenomics, bioinformatics and other forward-looking areas of pharmacy practice.”

The KGI School of Pharmacy White Coat Ceremony will take place on August 23 at 3 p.m. in the Garrison Theater at Scripps College in Claremont, California. In the audience, rooting for his son’s success will be Antonio Silva Sr., who is recovering from a recent heart attack.

“My father is a proud Mexican who never went to the doctor in his life, but now he has more of an appreciation for what medicine can do,” says Silva, who has been helping to make sure his father gets the right medication and sticks to a healthy regime.

“There’s a huge gap in health literacy and healthcare outcomes in the Hispanic community,” he adds. “I’m hoping I can contribute and help make it smaller.”

Founded in 1997, Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) is the seventh and newest member of the Claremont Colleges consortium. Its mission is to further education and research aimed at translating into practice, for the benefit of society, the power and potential of the life sciences.

Canola Oil Helps Control Blood Glucose in People with Type 2 Diabetes

Human Trial Also Shows Protection Against Cardiovascular Disease

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, July 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Canola oil can help control blood glucose (blood sugar) in people with type 2 diabetes when included as part of a low-glycemic index (GI) diet, according to research presented at the June 2014 American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions (abstract CT-SY24) and published in the peer-reviewed journal Diabetes Care. The study of Canadian adults with type 2 diabetes shows that adding canola oil to the diet is a simple way of helping control blood glucose and risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Diabetes affects about 3.3 million Canadians (9 percent) and 26 million Americans (8.3 percent).

In the multicenter, randomized controlled trial, 141 participants with type 2 diabetes who were taking drugs to control blood glucose were given either a test or control diet for three months. The test diet was low GI (minimizes fluctuations in blood glucose levels) and higher in fat, including bread made with canola oil (31 grams of oil per person per day). The control diet was healthy, low-fat and high-fiber, emphasizing whole wheat foods. Results showed that those who consumed the canola oil diet improved blood glucose control. Importantly, participants at increased risk for adverse effects from type 2 diabetes, such as those with high blood pressure, derived the greatest benefits.

“This study shows the advantage of using canola oil in type 2 diabetes to improve both blood cholesterol and blood glucose control by reducing the glycemic load (GI multiplied by the amount of carbohydrate in the diet), especially in those at highest risk of diabetes complications,” says lead researcher David J.A. Jenkins, M.D., Ph.D., DSc., professor and Canada Research Chair in Nutrition and Metabolism, Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Toronto as well as director, Risk Factor Modification Center, St. Michael’s Hospital. “These findings are timely since diabetes is expected to double in the next 20 years and means of preventing it and its complications are major concerns of governments and the general public.”

Beyond its results, the “Effect of Lowering the Glycemic Load with Canola Oil on Glycemic Control and Cardiovascular Risk Factors: A Randomized Controlled Trial” is important because it’s the first study to assess the combination of healthy fat consumption and a low-GI diet. The beneficial health effects of canola oil and its fat components (e.g., monounsaturated and omega-3 fats) have been independently shown in other studies.

In addition, even though study participants were being treated with drugs to control blood glucose and had low “bad” LDL cholesterol levels, canola oil consumption was associated with a significant, additional reduction in this type of cholesterol. This may translate into an extra 7 percent reduction in CVD events, Jenkins notes.

“The ability of canola oil to help control blood glucose in people with type 2 diabetes adds to existing evidence of several health benefits, including CVD risk reduction,” adds Shaunda Durance-Tod, M.Sc., R.D., CanolaInfo manager, Canola Council of Canada. “Further studies are now warranted on the effect of canola oil in a Mediterranean-type diet on glycemic control, blood fats and weight loss in type 2 diabetes.”

The canola oil study was led by the University of Toronto in collaboration with the University of Saskatchewan, McMaster University and University of Ottawa. It was funded by the Government of Canada and Canola Council of Canada.
