The exclusive networking event at the Hilton Midtown drew several hundred guests to sample Latino-inspired egg dishes created by executive chefs and to mingle with AEB senior staff and America’s egg farmers as part of AEB’s outreach to New York’s Latino community and families.

In fact, Latinos represent 58% of the year-over-year growth in egg purchases. “The influence of Hispanic culture in America today is increasing dramatically, and nowhere is this more evident than in cuisine. We want to showcase these contributions,” Alonzo said.

Stand Up To Cancer And Major League Baseball Hit Home With Powerful New PSA - "Whatever It Takes"

LOS ANGELES, Calif., Oct. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) is set to launch a new public service announcement (PSA) campaign in collaboration with SU2C Founding Donor Major League Baseball. The PSA, titled “Whatever It Takes,” features Major League players and moments from MLB’s Championship Season that underscore the message that the end of the fight against cancer is unlikely to come from a single “home run,” but rather will be the result of numerous and smaller, yet meaningful, scientific advancements that keep the fight moving forward. The broadcast PSA will debut Saturday, Oct. 28, during Game Four of the 2017 World Series. Continuing a proud tradition that launched in 2011, the 113th Fall Classic will feature a moving tribute in the form of the “SU2C Placard Moment” following the end of the 5th inning.  Thousands of fans in the ballpark will hold cards to honor those currently in the fight or who have been lost to cancer. MLB and its 30 Clubs are the founding donors of SU2C, committing $43 million to date to SU2C’s innovative cancer research.

Stand Up To Cancer And Major League Baseball Hit Home With Powerful New PSA - "Whatever It Takes"

In addition to the broadcast PSAs, a print PSA will be launched that features images of Major Leaguers Jason Kipnis (Cleveland Indians), Michael A. Taylor (Washington Nationals), and Yasmani Grandal (Los Angeles Dodgers).  In both PSAs, the players, each of whom appeared in the 2017 MLB Postseason, prepare to drop down bunts alongside photos of 10-year-old cancer survivor Jacob Teel of Delight, AR, and 33-year-old cancer survivor Dalia Margolis of Los Angeles, CA.

Teel, who has battled cancer three times in his young life and was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at the age of 3, became an instant media sensation after appearing in the All-Star Legends and Celebrity Softball Game this past July during MLB All-Star Week in Miami.  Teel hit a single and scored the first run for his team after MLB Network Analyst and former MLB All-Star Pitcher Al Leiter asked Teel to pinch hit for him. Margolis was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma in 2005 when she was 22. She underwent multiple rounds of chemotherapy and was declared cancer-free in 2006.

“Major League Baseball is proud that our partnership with Stand Up To Cancer is a prominent part of the celebration surrounding jewel events,” said Baseball Commissioner Robert D. Manfred, Jr. “We hope that launching this new public service announcement campaign alongside this year’s World Series Stand Up moment will give added attention to the cause.  Due to the great support from our fans, Clubs and players, Baseball continues the fight against this horrible disease.”

“The leadership, compassion and generous commitment MLB has demonstrated and made is absolutely extraordinary,” said SU2C Co-Founder Rusty Robertson. “For nearly a decade, MLB has been one of our biggest allies in leading a national movement for cutting-edge research and innovative cancer treatments to save lives. The sight of 50,000 people of all walks of life standing shoulder to shoulder with players, coaches, broadcasters, and owners, holding signs in honor of loved ones, has become one of the most indelible and moving tributes in all of sports and pop culture. It underscores how this terrible disease affects everyone, and it will take a powerful movement to end it.”

As a metaphor to describe the cancer research work being done by scientists and doctors worldwide to make discoveries that will advance new treatments, the PSA uses MLB game footage of several players executing one of baseball’s simplest, yet often effective, plays – the bunt (opposed to hitting the big home run) – to drive home the game-winning run.

Washington Nationals center fielder Michael Taylor said: “I am honored to be included in this Stand Up To Cancer campaign, and proud to help Major League Baseball in supporting this worthy cause. Unfortunately, it seems we’ve all had our lives touched by cancer in one way or another. I admire the strength and perseverance of all who go through that battle, and those committed to finding a cure.”

Cleveland Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis said: “I’m proud to participate in MLB’s SU2C campaign – with my mother’s illness and witnessing what Mike Aviles’ young daughter, Adriana, went through, I’m eager to assist any way I can to eliminate this awful disease.”

Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal said: “I’m appreciative of everything MLB is doing in the fight against cancer, and I’m honored to be included in Stand Up To Cancer’s campaign. My wife and I had a dear friend recently diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and we’re proud to stand with her and do what we can to support others in their battle against this horrible disease.”

The PSA features the message: “As we continue to swing for the fences, at Stand Up To Cancer we know that any advancement can bring someone home. Stand up for the 16 million people living with cancer in the U.S. and Canada. Visit StandUpToCancer.org.” The TV, print and radio creative was developed by San Francisco-based Duncan Channon, a two-time Ad Age Small Agency of the Year (2016 and 2017).

While we have made significant progress, there is much left to do in the fight against cancer. The disease still affects 1 in 2 men and 1 and 3 women in the U.S.

Since SU2C’s launch in 2008, Major League Baseball has provided year-round promotional support, including featured spotlights during the World Series, the MLB All-Star Game and many other individual games and activities throughout the year.

Statement of Stacey D. Stewart, President, March of Dimes on Declaration of Public Health Emergency on Opioid Epidemic

WASHINGTON, Oct. 26, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The March of Dimes released the following statement from President Stacey Stewart regarding the White House declaration of a public health emergency in the ongoing opioids epidemic:

March of Dimes Foundation Logo

“The March of Dimes commends President Trump for declaring a public health emergency in the opioid epidemic that has swept our nation, destroying the lives of countless Americans.  We must do everything in our power to end the scourge of opioid abuse. This is an important first step that must be followed up with a sustained effort, including additional federal funding.

“The March of Dimes urges our leaders to pay special attention to the toll of opioids on pregnant women and their children.  Use of opioids during pregnancy can cause infants to be born exposed to these drugs, who then experience the ravages of withdrawal in the first days and weeks of life.  It is imperative that we make it as easy as possible for pregnant women exposed to opioids to come forward and receive treatment.

“Too many opioid treatment programs refuse to treat pregnant women.  Instead, treatment of pregnant women should be a top priority to protect their health and the health of their babies.  While some progress is being made in this area, the federal government should target funding and other resources to this area to accelerate its pace. Moreover, policymakers should avoid punitive measures in favor of those that help women get the treatment they need.

“No infant should enter the world by experiencing drug withdrawal.  Pregnant women and their babies deserve to receive treatment and recovery support. The March of Dimes looks forward to working with the Administration in this critical effort to protect the health of all women and children.”

Teamster Leaders Join Port Truck Drivers In Supporting Jobs, Clean Air Reforms

International Brotherhood Of Teamsters.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 26, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Teamster leaders and port truck drivers fighting for their employee rights with the help of the Teamsters announced their support today for measures that would take steps to address the broken employment system that exists in port trucking and empower local ports to reduce pollution, mitigate traffic congestion, heighten highway safety and improve efficiency.

International Brotherhood Of Teamsters.

At a press conference on Capitol Hill this morning, Teamster leaders and port drivers said two separate bills introduced by Reps. Grace Napolitano (D-Calif.) and Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) would address the shadowy world of truck leasing exposed in a USA Today report earlier this year while also empowering local ports to clean up their acts – all without putting the burden on the backs of the truck drivers.

“For years, port truck drivers across the country have been forced to work long hours, often exceeding maximum hours of service set by the U.S. to keep America safe, in order to pay the company to lease and maintain their truck,” said Fred Potter, Vice President-at-Large at the Teamsters and Director of the Teamsters’ Port Division. “Rep. Napolitano’s bill would create a taskforce to review the broken system and crack down on bad actors.”

Meanwhile, Rep. Nadler’s legislation would modernize federal trucking rules to empower local ports to require ports address truck pollution and congestion at such facilities. Such requirements, said Teamsters Local 848 Secretary-Treasurer Eric Tate, are long overdue. “In the current inefficient port industry, drivers are often forced to idle for hours at marine terminals in trucks spewing filth into the air,” he said. “The ports need the ability to clean up harbor communities with the ability to own the retailers, not the drivers, accountable for necessary changes that would clean the air.”

Daniel “Seko” Uaina, a driver at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, said he is glad lawmakers are trying to address the challenges drivers like him are facing. “We are trying to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads,” he said. “I’m glad Congress is getting involved to improve workers’ lives.”

Wounded Warrior Project Helps Veterans in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Oct. 26, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Hurricane Maria roared ashore in Puerto Rico on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 20. The powerful storm packed sustained winds of more than 150 mph, whipping through an island nation already impacted by another hurricane just weeks earlier.

Photo – https://mma.prnewswire.com/media/591283/Wounded_Warrior_Project_Puerto_Rico.jpg

As the sun rose, the island of more than 3 million people – including about 75,000 veterans – discovered terrible devastation. Puerto Rico’s electric grid was in shambles. More than three weeks after Maria, the utility that provides water to 97 percent of the island struggles to meet demand.

Puerto Rico veterans have played a significant role in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. More than 700 injured veterans and family members on the island are registered with Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP). Like much of Puerto Rico, they have all been impacted by the hurricane.

WWP sent staff to the island recently and is focused on sending more people and supplies in coming weeks. Armed with food, water, hygiene kits, and baby formula, WWP staff Jonathan Pruden and Helbert Asparillo joined veterans Frankie Perez and German Rivera on a humanitarian mission. Thanks to the generous donations of the American public, they are able to crisscross the island, targeting small neighborhoods not yet reached by larger agencies.

“We have been focused on helping as many people as we can,” said Jonathan Pruden, WWP warrior relations specialist. “We went to the mountains west of Cayey at the request of the Department of Veterans Affairs to check on an amputee warrior living with post-traumatic stress. We found hundreds of individuals in desperate need of assistance. We helped all we could, veteran or not.”

Some of the warriors they reached need electricity to power health-aid equipment like CPAP machines and breathing devices. WWP is now sending generators to the island.

WWP is working closely with the Department of Veterans Affairs, FEMA, and other agencies and nonprofits to ensure assistance reaches as many Puerto Ricans as possible.

In more populated areas where electricity is available, that means providing food, water, and gift cards to purchase supplies.

“We are reaching warriors across the island, but more help is needed,” Jonathan said.

A new fireworks show, “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular,” will celebrate Pixar stories through the decades as it lights up the sky over Disneyland, connecting guests with characters they’ve come to know and love. Along with dazzling pyrotechnics and memorable music, a heartwarming story celebrates the theme of friendship, an ever-present concept in Pixar animation. Guests are invited to embark on an emotional journey that begins with the meeting of unlikely Pixar pals and follows their adventures as they overcome obstacles and forge everlasting friendships. “Together Forever” comes to life through projections on iconic park locations: Sleeping Beauty Castle, the water screens of the Rivers of America, the façade of “it’s a small world” and the buildings of Main Street, U.S.A. The grand tradition of Tinker Bell flying over Sleeping Beauty Castle also gets a Pixar twist, with a special flyover by Buzz Lightyear.

For the first time, “Pixar Play Parade” will make its way through Disneyland Park this spring, and it’s being led by someone new. The parade will begin just as all Pixar films have, with an appearance by Pixar’s iconic lamp from the short film “Luxo Jr.” Other new parade elements will welcome characters from “Up” and “Inside Out.”

Also on April 13, the guest-favorite “Paint the Night” parade returns, and this time the parade’s 1.5 million, brilliant LED lights and catchy tunes come to Disney California Adventure.  “Paint the Night” features pals from Disney•Pixar’s “Toy Story,” “Monsters, Inc.” and “Cars.” And another beloved Pixar story will join “Paint the Night” later in the year, adding to this guest-favorite experience.

A collection of Pixar Shorts will be featured at the Sunset Showcase Theater at Disney California Adventure during most of Pixar Fest, including favorites such as “For the Birds” and “LAVA.” The short films will rotate during the celebration.

A musical troupe will entertain guests with Pixar-inspired performances in the Paradise Gardens area of Disney California Adventure. Guests may also discover opportunities to greet Pixar characters, and younger guests will enjoy crafts and an activity area.

For those who wish to get into character and celebrate friendship, an exclusive Pixar Fest charm bracelet will be part of the merchandise selection. With multiple bracelet options and a variety of charms with fun friendship messages and Pixar characters, guests can mix and match for themselves, or friends and family.

A celebration of friendship this big is only complete with beloved characters like Buzz, Woody and Jessie from “Toy Story,” Mike and Sulley from “Monsters, Inc.,” Nemo and Dory from “Finding Nemo,” and Lightning McQueen and Mater from “Cars.” Those pals – and more – will be part of the fun at Pixar Fest.

Discovery en Español Exposes The Sex Tourism Industry In Medellín, Colombia

‘’El Mercado de la Inocencia’’ exposes the sex tourism in Medellin, Colombia, and showcases the story of hundreds of underage girls as they enter into a world of drugs and prostitution.

MIAMI, Oct. 26, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/– The long-gone Medellin Cartel has left a cursed legacy: sex tourism. Discovery en Español takes its cameras deep into Pablo Escobar’s hometown to showcase the business of the continuously expanding criminal networks and the journey of hundreds of minors as they enter a world of drugs and prostitution.  EL MERCADO DE LA INOCENCIA will premiere Sunday, November 5th at 10pm E/P as part of the “Discovery a Fondo” investigative programming block.

‘’El Mercado de la Inocencia’’ exposes the sex tourism in Medellin, Colombia, and showcases the story of hundreds of underage girls as they enter into a world of drugs and prostitution.

Over the last two decades, Medellin has gone from being globally known as a drug traffic and extreme violence destination to becoming a thriving cosmopolitan city. Progress and peace have resulted in an exponential increase of tourism, but have also caused unexpected collateral damage: the rise in sex tourism in this Colombian city. Many of the illegal networks run by foreigners in the United States and Europe, offer Medellin guided tours that include underage prostitutes in their packages available for online purchase.

Narrated and directed by ”Clandestino”’s journalist and researcher David Beriain, EL MERCADO DE LA INOCENCIA is a one-hour documentary that portrays criminal networks and witnesses teenagers entering Medellin’s illegal business as they start a journey that often begins by selling their virginity to the best foreign bidder.

EL MERCADO DE LA INOCENCIA is a Discovery en Español original production headed by Michela Giorelli, Rafael Rodriguez and Carlos Cediel. It was produced by 93 metros.

Everyday People Take Dyslexia Simulation Challenge to Support Learning Disabilities and ADHD Awareness Month

0

NEW YORK, Oct. 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Nearly 1,000 people filled New York City’s Flatiron Plaza on October 20 to experience firsthand what it’s like to live with learning and attention issues, like dyslexia and ADHD. The event, “#BeUnderstood: Make the Invisible Visible,” is part of Understood.org’s #BeUnderstood campaign in support of Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia and ADHD Awareness Month this October. A video of highlights from the event is available here.

Learning and attention issues can be difficult for many to understand. The event, co-hosted by Understood and the Ad Council, invited visitors to interact with simulations and art installations to help them see the challenges that 1 in 5 kids with learning and attention issues face every day.

The event is the latest in an ongoing partnership between the Ad Council and Understood, a program of the National Center for Learning Disabilities. Through the support of the Ad Council, Understood encourages parents to better understand and support children with learning and attention issues. Many people mistakenly believe that children with these challenges are going through a phase or “being lazy.” When these issues go without identification and support, children struggle: students with specific learning disabilities drop out of school at three times the rate of all students.*

“Many kids with learning and attention issues feel misunderstood,” said Mimi Corcoran, president and CEO of the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD). “Learning and attention issues may not be as visible as other issues, but they are just as real, and just as deserving of universal understanding and support.”

“We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to participate in our event and experience the frustrations of life with a learning or attention issue,” said Lisa Sherman, President & CEO of the Ad Council. “Living with these issues can be challenging, but the fantastic resources at Understood.org can help.”

Those who didn’t attend the event can try the simulation online, and share a photo or message of support using hashtag #BeUnderstood.

Throughout October, the #BeUnderstood campaign is supporting awareness for learning and attention issues through a variety of initiatives, including a Facebook profile filter and the release of an inspirational video series featuring celebrity mentors such as Olympian Simone Biles and Lieutenant Governor of California Gavin Newsom. Content in support of the campaign has been shared on social media by WWE, Alyssa Milano and others. The campaign is supported by Understood’s 15 founding nonprofit partners, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Ad Council. For more information, visit Be.Understood.org.
