Fireworks-Related Injuries and Deaths Spiked During the COVID-19 Pandemic

0

WASHINGTON, June 29, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The nation saw a large increase in people being hurt and killed by fireworks last year. Many municipalities cancelled July 4th public fireworks displays during the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have spurred consumers to use fireworks on their own.

Experience the interactive Multichannel News Release here: https://www.multivu.com/players/English/8910351-cpsc-report-fireworks-related-injuries-deaths-spiked-pandemic/

“These tragic deaths and injuries are reminders of just how dangerous fireworks can be,” said CPSC Acting Chairman Robert Adler. “Consumers should enjoy professional fireworks displays from a distance, and be extra vigilant when using consumer-type fireworks.”

A new report by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) finds a 50 percent increase in deaths and injuries from fireworks-related incidents in 2020, compared to 2019.

  • At least 18 people died from fireworks-related incidents in 2020, compared to 12 reported for the previous year.
  • About 15,600 people were treated in hospital emergency departments for fireworks injuries in 2020. There were about 10,000 ER-treated fireworks injuries in 2019.

Other important highlights from CPSC’s report:

  • Of the 18 deaths, 8 of the victims (44 percent) had used alcohol or drugs prior to the incident.
  • Most fireworks-related injuries (about 66 percent) occurred in the month surrounding the July 4th holiday (from June 21, 2020 to July 21, 2020). During that one-month period:
    • Severe injuries related to fireworks increased in 2020. More consumers were admitted to the hospital, or were transferred to another hospital for treatment, due to severe fireworks injuries in 2020 (21 percent) versus 2019 (12 percent).
    • Young adults ages 20-24 saw the biggest spike in visits to the hospital emergency room for fireworks-related injuries, compared to any age group last year, 17 injuries per 100,000 people in 2020 versus 2.8 per 100,000 people in 2019.
    • Firecrackers were the biggest source of ER-treated fireworks injuries (1,600), followed by sparklers (900).
    • The parts of the body most often injured were hands and fingers, at 30 percent. The head, face and ears were the second most injured body parts, at 22 percent. Eye injuries were third at 15 percent.
    • Burns were the most common fireworks-related, emergency room-treated injury, at 44 percent.

Tips to Celebrate Safely

  • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit—hot enough to melt some metals.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy, in case of fire or other mishap.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then move away from the fireworks device quickly.
  • Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water, and throw them away.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Move to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
  • Never point or throw fireworks (including sparklers) at anyone.
  • After fireworks complete their burning, to prevent a trash fire, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding the device.
  • Make sure fireworks are legal in your area, and only purchase and set off fireworks that are labeled for consumer (not professional) use.
  • Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

“¡Pleibol!” Slides Into Smithsonian Summer 2021

WASHINGTON, June 29, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — This summer, the crack of the bat and the roar of the crowd will echo throughout neighborhood fields and Major League Stadiums. On July 2, “¡Pleibol! In the Barrios and the Big Leagues/En los barrios y las grandes ligas,” a bilingual exhibition, will open at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

Roberto Clemente, Forbes Field, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, around 1967. Courtesy of The Clemente Museum

A high school letterman jacket, a handmade ball from Cuba and recreation-league jerseys are exhibited alongside Roberto Clemente’s Pittsburgh Pirates batting helmet, Anthony Rendon’s childhood jersey and an autographed ball from the gold-winning 2004 U.S. Olympics women’s softball team to highlight the breadth of experience and talent Latinas/os have brought to America’s pastime.

The museum’s Albert M. Small Documents Gallery captures the excitement of the sport with larger-than-life heroes, inspirational quotes, graphics, photographs, more than 60 artifacts and fan memorabilia. A six-minute video produced with La Vida Baseball runs on a loop, capturing baseball’s energy and excitement while providing a glimpse into the lives of Latino and Latin American players and their communities. “¡Pleibol!” shows the passion and dedication of Latino communities and how their incredible talent has transformed American culture and society through the lens of baseball, the national pastime.

“‘¡Pleibol!’ presents Major League stories, but it is first and foremost rooted in communities and the reality of who was allowed to play ball and where,” said Margaret Salazar-Porzio, curator in the museum’s Division of Cultural and Community Life. “The story we tell shows how Latinas and Latinos have used baseball to chase their dreams, challenge prejudice and build communities.”

Throughout the 20th century in the United States and Latin America, baseball provided Latinas/os opportunities for recreation, a means to make ends meet, a socially acceptable space to find community and a field for workers in agriculture and industry to organize for rights and justice.

As of 2020, Latino players accounted for about 30% of the Major League roster and Latinas/os are making inroads as broadcasters, scouts, managers and even owners of Major League Baseball teams. “¡Pleibol!” focuses on how Latina/o pioneers changed the game nationally in the Major Leagues and locally in their communities. Among the women trailblazers in the exhibit are Marge Villa-Cryan, represented by her girlhood uniform from before she became one of the few Latinas to play in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League; Colorado Rockies team co-owner Linda Alvarado, with her team jacket; and ESPN sports broadcaster Jessica Mendoza, who donated some of her media credentials and is a two-time medal-winning Olympian, playing for the U.S. softball team. Their artifacts will be displayed alongside artwork, scrapbooks, homemade baseball equipment and community-league jerseys that demonstrate the importance of baseball in the everyday lives of Latino families. Many of these artifacts are new to the museum’s collections and have never been on display.

The Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) is traveling a version of “¡Pleibol!” to 15 cities through 2025. It is currently on view at El Pueblo History Museum in Colorado through Aug. 1. The traveling exhibition encourages host organizations to highlight local stories through the inclusion of objects from their collections and communities. The Smithsonian also has released a set of interactive 3D models featuring artifacts from the museum’s collections with accompanying bilingual tours, augmented-reality functionality for smartphones and other capabilities, and a bilingual Learning Lab collection provides online resources for K–12 students with stories, photos, objects and engaging activities.

The companion book ¡Pleibol! In the Barrios and the Big League /En los barrios y las grandes ligas by Margaret Salazar-Porzio and Adrian Burgos Jr. with Robin Morey was published last year. To celebrate the opening, the museum is planning a series of programs, beginning with a live-streamed virtual opening July 9, a July 26 “Cooking Up History” virtual event featuring favorite stadium foods, a series of digital videos, a Hispanic Heritage month event and a Sept. 17 hashtag party, #NuestroBaseball, through which participants can share baseball stories, photos and artifacts. Program information will be updated and available through the exhibition website.

“¡Pleibol! In the Barrios and the Big Leagues/En los barrios y las grandes ligas” is made possible through close collaborations with more than 30 partners in 14 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico to help bring visibility to Latino community histories through baseball. In a series of collecting and preservation events over five years (2015–2019), Smithsonian curators traveled the country and collaborated with local partners to document and preserve baseball stories at the heart of Latino communities. Among the partners are John M. Pfau Library at California State University, San Bernardino, California; Institute of Texan Cultures at the University of Texas, San Antonio, Texas; Kansas City Museum; LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, Los Angeles; Syracuse University, La Casita Cultural Center, Syracuse, New York; and many others.

The exhibition is organized by the National Museum of American History in collaboration with SITES. It received support from the Cordoba Corp. and Linda Alvarado and federal support from the Latino Initiatives Pool, administered by the Smithsonian Latino Center.

Through incomparable collections, rigorous research and dynamic public outreach, the National Museum of American History seeks to empower people to create a more just and compassionate future by examining, preserving and sharing the complexity of our past. The museum, located on Constitution Avenue N.W., between 12th and 14th streets, recently reopened. Its new (temporary) public hours are Friday through Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, but reserved time-entry passes are required. To make reservations, visit si.edu/visit. For more information go to: https://americanhistory.si.edu.

SITES has been sharing the wealth of Smithsonian collections and research programs with millions of people outside Washington, D.C., for more than 65 years. For tour information and schedules, visit sites.si.edu.

Truecaller Releases its Seventh Annual “Insights U.S. Spam & Scam Report,” Showing $29.8 Billion Lost to Scam Calls in Past Year

0
Total Americans That Lost Money To Scam Calls

NEW YORK, June 29, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Truecaller, the world’s best caller ID and spam blocking app, today announces the results of its seventh annual “Insights U.S. Spam & Scam Report.” The research was conducted in partnership with The Harris Poll in March of 2021 and its findings detail trends on the growing number and methods of phone scams that have permeated the U.S. over the last 12 months.

Total Americans That Lost Money To Scam Calls

According to the study, one in three Americans (31%) reported having fallen victim to phone scams, 19% on more than one occasion. This past year has proven to be the most costly year ever, with an average reported loss of $502, up 43% ($351) from last year’s 2020 report. Over the last seven years, Truecaller has seen decreases in reported spam calls — primarily in 2015 and 2019 — but these past two years have seen over 100% increase in spam calls since 2019. This year set a new record for the highest ever average amount of money lost to phone scams with a $29.8 billion loss, a 51.2% increase compared to last year’s $19.7 billion loss.

Key Findings of the Report Include:

  • COVID-19 perpetuated scam calls and texts:
Scammers have taken advantage of a vulnerable situation to fraud victims with COVID-19 related messages. The report saw 59% of Americans have received scam calls or text messages related to COVID-19 in the past 12 months, up from 44% in March of 2020.

  • Robocalls saw continued success:
Although the number of victims who lost money to robocalls fell this past year from 61.5% to 60%, it continues to be a pervasive means of fraud. A staggering three in five (60%) Americans have admitted to losing money as a direct result of a robocall. On average, Americans reported receiving 30.7 spam calls (mobile and/or landline) per month, with 21.5 of those reportedly attributed to robocalls.

  • Men and younger populations continue to be the most susceptible to scams with seniors increasingly victimized during and post pandemic:
The survey found that in the past 12 months, among those who have been victim of a phone scam, 59.4% of were male and 38.3% were female, while the rest (2.3%) identified as non-binary or preferred not to reveal their gender. Around 40% of men between 18-34 were scammed compared to only 10% of males aged 65+. Similarly, only 3% of females 65+ reported being scammed over the last year.

  • Spam blockers/caller ID is the predominant action after being scammed:
The study found that after being scammed, 44% of people in the last year downloaded a spam blocker and/or caller ID app, like Truecaller, while 31% took the inconvenient step of cancelling their credit card/changing account numbers. Around one third (31%) of those being scammed went through the process of reporting the scam to authorities.

“This year’s study has emphasized the need for efficient and accurate CallerID services and spam analytics, which our team at Truecaller delivers for hundreds of millions of consumers around the globe. We do this by balancing effective robocall mitigation with prioritization of legitimate businesses and critical communications to help protect American consumers,” says Alan Mamedi, CEO and Co-Founder at Truecaller.

The study found that 85% of Americans said they try to only answer calls if they can identify the person or business they are calling from. With Truecaller, legitimate businesses and organizations can register and brand their numbers, ensuring they aren’t incorrectly identified as spam, ensuring  consumers can receive information from their schools, bank, healthcare provider, local community, and other important services.

For more information, visit truecaller.com or download the app through Google Play® for Android® devices and through Apple’s® App Store® for iOS devices.

Survey Methodology:
The phone scam survey was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of Truecaller from March 16-18, 2021 among 2,045 U.S. adults aged 18 and older. The phone spam survey was conducted online within the United States by The Harris Poll on behalf of Truecaller from March 18-22, 2021 among 2,002 U.S. adults ages 18 and older.

New Honda Prologue SUV Begins Next Chapter in Brand’s EV Direction in North America

Honda Logo.

TORRANCE, Calif., June 28, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Honda today announced that its first new volume battery-electric vehicle will be named “Prologue,” signaling a new electrified era that will lead to the company’s vision for 100% zero emission vehicle sales in North America by 2040. An all-new SUV coming to market in early 2024, the battery-electric Honda Prologue will be highly competitive with the functionality expected by Honda customers.  More specific details about the new vehicle will be released over the coming months, and Honda will engage with prospective EV customers throughout the launch starting with a new webpage at https://automobiles.honda.com/future-cars/prologue.

Honda Logo.

In addition to the Honda Prologue, the company will introduce an all-electric Acura SUV in the 2024 calendar year. Both will utilize the highly flexible global EV platform powered by Ultium batteries based on the company’s strategic partnership with General Motors. Honda also plans to launch a new series of EV models in the second half of the decade based on a new e:Architecture, with development led by Honda.

“Our first volume Honda BEV will begin our transition to electrification and the name Honda Prologue signals the role it will play in leading to our zero-emission future,” said Dave Gardner, executive vice president of American Honda. “The Prologue will provide our customers with a battery-electric SUV with the excellent functionality and packaging they’ve come to expect from Honda.”

In April 2021, Honda global CEO, Toshihiro Mibe, announced a vision to achieve carbon-neutrality for its products and corporate activities by 2050, including key targets for sales of electrified vehicles. This vision calls for the sales ratio of battery-electric and fuel cell electric vehicles in North America to progress from 40% by 2030 and 80% by 2035 to 100% by 2040. More details about that announcement, are available here.

Honda Electrified Vehicle History
Honda has a long history of leadership in bringing electrified vehicles to market in the U.S., beginning almost a quarter century ago with the EV Plus electric vehicle (1997); to America’s first hybrid, the Honda Insight (1999); the Honda FCX (2002), the industry’s first fuel cell vehicle in the hands of individual customers, and the Clarity series (2017). As Honda prepares for the launch of Prologue, the company will introduce hybrid-electric systems to more core models to continue to reduce CO2 emissions and bridge customers to the volume battery-electric vehicles now in development.

“We know customers who have a good experience with a hybrid vehicle are more likely to buy a battery electric vehicle in the future,” said Gardner. “Our strategy is focused on introducing a higher percentage of hybrids in core models in the near term, making a committed effort to achieve higher volume leading to the introduction of our Honda Prologue.”

Honda achieved record sales of electrified vehicles in each of the past three years, with that sales momentum continuing in 2021. Led by CR-V Hybrid and Accord Hybrid, Honda has just recorded its best-ever first-half year of electrified vehicle sales.

The trusted online travel agency brings kids’ imaginations to life through one-of-a-kind vacations

DALLAS, June 28, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Summer travel is officially back and Travelocity® is helping families find the confidence to get back to making vacation memories. While summer getaways are in full swing, many travelers are pushing their dream vacations to someday in the future as the pressure to plan a trip that makes the whole family happy can be overwhelming. To encourage families to finally break the procrastination cycle and seize their “Somedays,” the brand is transforming children’s imaginative drawings into real vacations.

Seize Your Someday

Now through Friday, July 9, 2021, families can visit TravelocityTripsbyKids.com to submit their mini artist’s masterpiece to win a family vacation imagined by kids and planned by Travelocity1. Be it stick-figure family portraits, abstract doodles or colorful sketches, Travelocity’s team of experts will translate what’s on the page into a unique vacation for five families, valued at up to $10,000 each.

While adults are saddled with the stress and time needed to plan, kids are naturally more spontaneous and have imaginations that are free to roam. Between summer camp creations and endless art projects from the last year, vacation inspiration is likely already hanging on the fridge.

“We know that planning a trip can be daunting, especially when balancing different needs and budgets. As lives get more complex, we found that families are putting off their vacations, saying they’ll take that one trip ‘Someday,'” said Katie Junod, General Manager at Travelocity. “We want to arm families with the confidence to find and book a vacation that’s right for them. What better way to do that than lean on their kids’ brilliant minds combined with Travelocity’s 25 years of travel expertise?”

Travelocity will create an epic experience based on each family’s needs. We’ll turn the winning submissions into the perfect itineraries for five families, so they can discover more and worry less. A drawing of a farm hanging on the fridge could send one family on a western retreat, whereas a few green squiggles and outline of a boat could result in an epic airboat tour of the Everglades.

The contest ends Friday, July 9, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. EST. The first 2,000 entrants will receive a special coupon redeemable via the Travelocity app. To enter and for Official Rules, visit TravelocityTripsbyKids.com.

Ricky Taylor piloted his Acura ARX-05 prototype to his first pole of the 2021 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship today at Watkins Glen International Raceway in preparation for Sunday's Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen.

Defending IMSA series champion and Rolex 24 winner Ricky Taylor scored his first pole of the 2021 season for Wayne Taylor Racing, edging fellow Acura pilot Dane Cameron by just 0.119 second in his Meyer Shank Racing ARX-05 prototype.

In the production-based GTD category, John Potter qualifying his Magnus with Archangel Acura NSX GT3 Evo 11th; and will share driving duties tomorrow with Andy Lally and Spencer Pumpelly.

Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen Qualifying Results

  • 2nd overall – #60 Dane Cameron, Meyer Shank Racing Acura ARX-05 DPi
  • 11th GTD – #44 John Potter, Magnus with Archangel Acura NSX GT3 Evo

Quotes

Ricky Taylor (#10 Wayne Taylor Racing ARX-05) pole qualifier; race co-drivers will be Filipe Albuquerque and Alexander Rossi: “The Acura is a fantastic car here at Watkins Glen. Coming here, we knew we’d be strong and we were really looking forward to it.  This chassis and engine package was really designed to perform best at European-style tracks:  really fast, flowing, and smooth circuits.  So when we come to Watkins Glen, we know we can run the car low [to the ground] and take advantage of the horsepower and aero platform the Acura provides. For sure, I wouldn’t want to be in any other car here. It’s a dream to drive.”

Dane Cameron (#60 Meyer Shank Racing Acura ARX-05): Qualified second; co-drivers will be Olivier Pla: “It is always good to be on the front row, it’s a ‘good view’. I’m not fully happy with my [best] lap, I think I made a couple of small mistakes on the quick lap and I think that made a difference, so I am a little disappointed on that. But overall, we’ve had a good competitive weekend so far [leading both practice sessions prior to qualifying] and we’ve got a good car. Six hours is a long time, and I think there will be some different weather conditions to come so we will see how we get along on Sunday.”

Fast Facts

  • This is Acura’s first front row qualifying sweep of 2021. It also was the first pole of the season for Taylor and his Wayne Taylor Racing squad [after qualifying on the front row at Sebring and Mid-Ohio]; and the first front-row start of 2021 for Cameron and Meyer Shank Racing.
  • While Taylor edged Cameron by just 0.xxx for the pole, Cameron’s Acura prototype was nearly five tenths of a second [+0.496s] quicker than the next-best car in the session.
  • Taylor and season-long co-driver Filipe Albuquerque have unofficially extended their Drivers’ Championship lead to 80 points over Oliver Jarvis and Harry Tincknell.
