Esperanza provides a multisensory literacy program to help bilingual students with dyslexia improve areas of need

AUSTIN, Texas, April 29, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — AmplioSpeech (“Amplio”), a developer of a digital platform that connects students, educators and therapists with advanced technologies to help students with special needs, announced today the launch of a digital Spanish-language dyslexia curriculum, Esperanza, developed by Dr. Elsa Cárdenas-Hagan. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is offering Amplio’s digital intervention platform with the Esperanza curriculum to all 1,029 school districts at no cost. Earlier this year, Amplio and TEA launched an English-language dyslexia digital intervention platform utilizing the Multisensory Teaching Approach (MTA), developed by Margaret Taylor Smith, which is also available to all Texas school districts at no cost. Esperanza is the first Spanish-language dyslexia curriculum of its kind.

“Using advanced technologies, Amplio’s platform facilitates individualized, outcomes-focused interventions and intensive digital guided practice, correlating to student progress,” said Dr. Yair Shapira, founder and CEO of Amplio. “We’re excited to offer the first-ever digital Spanish-language dyslexia curriculum with Esperanza, which will help bilingual students gain native language literacy.”

“Amplio was designed for use in the classroom, during a lesson, as well as when remote instruction is needed,” Dr. Shapira added. “At a time when educators and parents are concerned with the tremendous toll of learning loss and the ‘COVID slide,’ we must think out-of-the-box to help our students and educators quickly recover this lost time.”

By addressing specific sounds, words and general reading concepts, interventionists can use Esperanza to provide differentiated and individualized therapy for Spanish-speaking or bilingual students with dyslexia. Utilizing advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and natural language processing, the platform functions as an extension of the interventionist by assessing student responses and providing visual and audio cues to support the lesson. Amplio recently piloted Esperanza in Ysleta and Crowley ISDs, directly impacting over 40 students with dyslexia.

Dr. Elsa Cárdenas-Hagan, Director of the Valley Speech Language and Learning Center and Amplio partner, commented, “It has always been my hope that all children have access to high-quality reading interventions. The demand for digital and online resources for students has dramatically increased. The Amplio platform allows the Esperanza Spanish literacy program to reach more students with the added benefit of highly-trained professionals who now have access to real-time data that informs and enhances literacy instruction. Through the Amplio platform we can further accelerate our mission of providing every bilingual child the opportunity to read and learn.”

In May 2020, TEA approached Amplio to help address learning challenges faced by students in speech and language therapy programs due to the outbreak of COVID-19 and the switch to remote at-home learning. Speech-Language Pathologists have access to Amplio’s platform and interact remotely with students to provide speech therapy required by each student’s individualized education program (IEP). More than 10,000 students have received services through Amplio’s platform, and the partnership has effectively allowed Speech-Language Pathologists and Interventionists to support large caseloads virtually, while also providing valuable documenting, monitoring and oversight services.

Amplio will be leading a live webinar about Esperanza on Thursday, April 29, 1:30-2:30 pm CT, via TEA.

AfinArte Music Continues Its Reign As One Of The Premier Labels In Latin Music

Los Dos Carnales, El Fantasma and Voz De Mando

LOS ANGELES, April 29, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — AfinArte Music, the prominent regional Mexican record label that has launched the brilliant careers of globally popular acts such as El Fantasma and Los Dos Carnales, sustains its rise in 2021 as one of the premier labels in Latin music today.

Los Dos Carnales, El Fantasma and Voz De Mando

Founded in 2013 by brothers Luis and Eddie Sánchez and Jorge Gaxiola, lead vocalist of the legendary norteño band Voz de Mando, AfinArte Music quickly established itself as an influential force. Working to preserve and celebrate the historic traditions of regional Mexican music, and the rich cultural heritage that surrounds the genres it encompasses, together Luis, Eddie and Jorge impressively succeeded in catapulting the label’s talented roster from its grassroots beginnings touring through clubs and the festival scene to the acclaimed stages of large-scale arenas, including Staples Center, San Jose Convention Center, and Citizens Arena, among others.

As a result of the brothers’ focused efforts, AfinArte garnered notoriety rapidly and steadily and was recognized for its phenomenal ingenuity, earning recognition as the indie label “to watch” in 2018-2019. During that time, the label experienced explosive growth, leading to a mention for the company’s CEO, Luis Sánchez, on Billboard’s coveted Latin Power Players list at the end of 2019.

AfinArte Music continued to make big moves in 2020. While Sánchez continued to solidify the label as one of the most powerful independent labels in the music industry, winning a spot on Billboard’s respected Indie Power Players list that summer, the company expanded its reach throughout the United States and Mexico and appointed Jorge Gaxiola, the label’s co-founder, as its Head of A&R. The label also broadened their award-winning roster with the addition of up-and-coming artists like singer-songwriter Adriana Rios, underground corrido singer songwriter Kanales, Voz de Mando, Irene Del Rosario, Gerardo Diaz, Los Dos De Tamaulipas, and more.

Among AfinArte Music’s brightest moments are the successes it has experienced with El Fantasma and Los Dos Carnales. Having released eleven albums under the label, El Fantasma has racked up hundreds of millions of streams, becoming one of the 10 most streamed regional Mexican artists on Spotify and winning a spot on Billboard’s 2020 Top 50 Latin Artists list. Across two album releases with AfinArte Music, Los Dos Carnales have also garnered hundreds of millions of streams, with their sophomore album alone winning 100 million streams in less than a year. In 2021, the flourishing duo arrived at the Latin American Music Awards, performing with Latin Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Camilo.

National Campaign Promotes Mental Health for Middle Schoolers with New Music from KAMAUU, Tobe Nwigwe, Lauren Jauregui, Empress Of

Ad_Council_Logo

NEW YORK, April 29, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — When your child can’t find the words, help them find the lyrics. Today, the national Sound It Out campaign launches with a new album and resources to help parents and caregivers have meaningful conversations about emotional wellbeing with their middle schoolers. The songs will be available across all major streaming platforms and can be heard on the campaign website at SoundItOutTogether.org, which also offers free expert-vetted resources to guide conversations.

Experience the interactive Multichannel News Release here: https://www.multivu.com/players/English/8868051-ad-council-sound-it-out/

The campaign—a collaboration between the Ad Council and Pivotal Ventures, an investment and incubation company created by Melinda Gates—comes at a time when many young people are struggling with isolation and stress caused by the pandemic, on top of the normal pressures of growing up. Sound It Out places an emphasis on reaching parents and caregivers in Black and Hispanic/Latinx communities, which often face the additional trauma of systemic racism and greater challenges in accessing the support they need. Songs, videos and resources will be available in English and Spanish.

Inspired by the insight that music can help unlock conversations between middle schoolers and their parents or caregivers, the campaign features exclusive new music and interviews from recording artists KAMAUU, Tobe Nwigwe, Lauren Jauregui and Empress Of. The artists participated in intimate conversations with middle schoolers and their caregivers, facilitated by mental health experts, and translated the kids’ emotions and experiences into songs.

“The most impressionable minds of any group of people are the minds of children. In America, the most systematically attacked and targeted community is the ‘Black’ community,” said KAMAUU, who wrote and recorded a song inspired by his conversation with Howie, a 14-year-old from New York. “I was drawn to participate and be a part of this project in the name of self-preservation. In doing what I can to help the youth and parents (fathers and mothers), I can help create a better community for myself and for my future children.”

“Conversations with young people about their emotional health and wellbeing can be difficult, but are critically important, especially during a pandemic that has left many feeling isolated and alone,” said Dr. Renee Wittemyer, Director of Program Strategy and Investment for Pivotal Ventures. “The Sound It Out campaign uses the unique power of music to help young people and the adults who care for them find a common language to express these emotions. Innovative efforts like this one are essential to helping more young people get the support they need.”

There is currently a mental health crisis among our nation’s youth. The transitional period of adolescence marks a critical time for parents and caregivers to engage their children in conversations around their emotional wellbeing.

  • According to the National Institute of Mental Health, more than half of mental illness begins before age 14
  • The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports the suicide rate nearly tripled among young people aged 10-14 between 2007 to 2017
  • A CDC analysis shows that the share of emergency room visits for mental health challenges, like panic and anxiety, increased by 31% among adolescents aged 12-17 during the pandemic, indicating the negative effects of social isolation and lockdowns

“The Sound it Out project is a labor of love. Grounded in careful consideration of the cultural nuances relevant for Black and Latinx families, this project is led by a team with deep commitment to getting the conversation right,” said Dr. Alfiee Breland-Noble, psychologist and founder of mental health nonprofit the AAKOMA Project. “Together, we have worked diligently to incorporate a culturally fluent approach to supporting families of color in building effective conversations for reducing mental illness stigma and fostering emotional wellbeing. I am so proud to be a team member and expert advisor on this project.”

“Getting middle schoolers to open up about their emotions can be hard, but music is a powerful medium that helps us put our thoughts and feelings into words. When we can’t find a way to say it, there’s probably a song that can,” said Heidi Arthur, Chief Campaign Development Officer at the Ad Council. “At a time when it couldn’t be more needed, Sound It Out uses music to help parents and caregivers have more meaningful conversations with their kids about their emotional wellbeing.”

Public service advertisements (PSAs) for the campaign, developed by McCann with support from Casanova//McCann, EGAMI Group and Mass Appeal, will appear nationwide in time and space donated by the media. The campaign also features a music video for KAMAUU’s song “Howie and the Howl,” directed by Jared Malik Royal and featuring the work of prominent artist Hebru Brantley, whose iconic work elevates the narrative of Black heroes. An intentional collective of diverse creatives brought the campaign to life, including the photographer, video director, director of photography, editor, producers, mix engineers and stylists.

Media agency UM is providing pro bono media strategy and outreach. Bustle Digital Group, Facebook, Pinterest, TikTok and ViacomCBS are among the media platforms that will support the campaign with donated media. Additionally, ViacomCBS will provide custom content and content integration as part of their ongoing focus on tackling mental health crisis through media and storytelling.

The exclusive album will be available to stream across Amazon Music, Apple Music, deezer, Google Play, iTunes, Pandora, SoundCloud, Spotify, Tidal and YouTube. Caregivers can also access the campaign videos, songs and resources on Sound It Out channels on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

“The generational stigma and subsequent gravity of mental health conversations in my community have been top of mind more than ever. It feels inaccessible not only from a lack of tools, but from a lack of the language to talk about it. The lyrics of music, however, have the magic to speak on every emotion for a sound mind,” said Gabrielle Shirdan, VP Creative Director at McCann NY. Sound It Out tells the stories that haven’t been told and uses music as an instrument to shift the culture of mental health — tools every child should grow up with. This work is for a kid in Brooklyn just trying to tell his father how he feels.”

Leading mental health experts provided guidance and input on every stage of the development of the Sound It Out campaign and website. Additionally, Sound It Out will be amplified by a network of non-profit organizations focused on mental health and health equity, including the AAKOMA Project, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Boys and Girls Club, Child Mind Institute, Education Leaders of Color (EdLOC), The Jed Foundation, Learning Heroes, National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), National Council for Behavioral Health, UnidosUS and the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. Specific activations that will extend the reach of Sound It Out to key audiences over the coming year include The Jed Foundation placing resources in schools; AAP distributing content through its network of pediatricians; and UnidosUS sharing campaign assets with affiliates.

PIH Health Talks About the Connection Between Mammograms and the COVID-19 Vaccine

Physician Weighs in on the Importance of Screenings and Not Delaying Care

WHITTIER, Calif., April 28, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — PIH Health is sending an important message to women across the nation: Don’t delay your mammogram on account of potential swollen lymph nodes due to COVID-19 vaccines and don’t delay COVID-19 vaccination as both are important to your health. Doctors have noticed that the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines can cause swollen lymph nodes under the arm in which the shot was given. These benign lymph node enlargements will show up on a mammogram, which may cause unnecessary worry.

PIH Health Logo

For this reason, some healthcare providers suggest that women either get their mammograms before the vaccine, or postpone their mammograms until four to six weeks after receiving the vaccine—enough time for the lymph nodes to go back to their normal size.

However, PIH Health radiologists are aware of the connection and factor any vaccination timing into their interpretation of results.

“Reactive or swollen lymph nodes in the area after any vaccine are to be expected,” explains James Kuo MD, radiologist at PIH Health. “Lymph nodes are part of the body’s natural immune system, and swelling is a sign that the body is responding to the vaccine and building up defenses against COVID-19.”

In the vast majority of cases, with proper vaccination information, PIH Health radiologists can correctly attribute the swollen lymph nodes to the vaccination without further workup. “We believe this approach will prevent delays in both screening mammography and COVID-19 vaccination, dispel confusion, and provide patients with the best care possible,” says Dr. Kuo.

PIH Health recommends that screening mammograms continue as scheduled—women’s breast health is too important.

To schedule a mammogram visit PIHHealth.org/Mammogram.

The MOWI Essential™ debuts at the Northgate Market grocery chain with 6 SKUs: the core line, and the line extension with unique pre-seasoned cuts. Northgate Gonzalez Market celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2020 and operates as one of the leading supermarket chains focused on the Hispanic customer in the US market, a grocery chain that offers a unique experience with multiple locations in California. It is a staple with many generations of Hispanic Heritage consumers that expect their seafood space be populated with great variety and quality.

Referencing the U.S. Census data, that reported multicultural segments made up 40% of the U.S. population, “marketing MOWI Essential™ to the largest growing segment in our market is important and strategic to continue growing the Salmon experience among consumers. There is a lot of diversity among Latinx with growing needs, food trends and tastes – from Mexico, Caribbean, to Central and South America.  It is an exciting time to incorporate MOWI® salmon with Latin flavors and fusions. But Northgate Market is not only the destination of Latinx customers. Located in California, it’s also a preferred grocery experience for foodies and seafood aficionados. The MOWI brand continues to be the focus of expansion in 2021-2022. Building a customized program with great retailers like Northgate Gonzalez Market provides Mowi with new opportunities to invigorate the seafood category.

A program in place with the California grocery chain will be supported by a bilingual marketing campaign that will reach out to a diverse population. The L’ATTITUDE Mainstream Experience is the largest gathering in the country focused on the New Mainstream Economy and the U.S. Latino cohort leading economic growth across nearly every business sector.

L’ATTITUDE will again boast a who’s who list of high-profile CEOs, financial executives, business leaders, political leaders, key media and entertainment celebrities all focused on leveraging America’s unique economic power, the U.S. Latino cohort. The 2021 event will include the release of the latest data from the annual U.S. Latino GDP Report provided by the Latino Donor Collaborative (LDC), which experts predict will demonstrate the economic output of the U.S. Latino cohort surpassing Great Britain and France to become the sixth largest economy in the world.

“The goal of L’ATTITUDE is to identify and inspire actions that help grow the New Mainstream Economy in our country, not simply talk about growth in theoretical terms,” said Sol Trujillo, co-founder of L’ATTITUDE.  “As we begin to see the light at the end of this pandemic, it’s never been more critical to unlock exponential growth. The New Mainstream Economy led by the U.S. Latino cohort has fueled our nation’s recovery dating back to the Great Recession, and will once again lead us into the next stage of economic prosperity.”

A series of special features will play a prominent role at L’ATTITUDE 2021, showcasing Latino(a) business leaders who demonstrate benchmarking action on boards and leadership teams, and commitment to serving the growing U.S. Latino cohort. The announcement of the 50 Most Powerful Latinas will take place in partnership with the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA), recognizing the powerful women driving business growth across our economy. Match-Up at L’ATTITUDE will take place as a special feature, growing this year to fund up to two-dozen emerging Latino-owned companies that are ready to scale and become market leaders, while L’ATTITUDE Ventures, supporting Match-Up, is rapidly becoming the largest Latino-owned and focused venture capital fund in the country. LATINXT at L’ATTITUDE is expanding this year to introduce the world to the next big superstars in not only entertainment, but across all sectors including technology, business, retail, housing, healthcare, politics, and sports.

An important addition this year will be L’ATTITUDE Connections, where executives of America’s biggest companies will connect with new mainstream Latino businesses and suppliers.

Among the many exciting new additions to the L’ATTITUDE Mainstream Experience, will be Festival at L’ATTITUDE, which will feature The Taste of L’ATTITUDE, a seaside culinary experience and celebration of Latino chefs and influencers that have been negatively impacted by COVID-19. Joining in this tribute onsite will be world-famous Chef Jose Andres whose organization, World Central Kitchen, has served millions of free meals during the food shortages of COVID-19.

As part of Festival at L’ATTITUDE, musical entertainment will be provided in the adjacent Performance Shell featuring the next generation of Latino bands and singers during the afternoon, leading up to a once-in-a-lifetime evening of superstar entertainment, produced by L’ATTITUDE partner, Emilio Estefan. With top-tier names soon to be announced, and others left as surprises, this will be a can’t-miss addition to L’ATTITUDE that will be remembered for years to come.

Estefan added, “It gives me the greatest joy to complement this premier business and economic event with Festival at L’ATTITUDE, a celebration of rising Latino(a) talent and world-renowned artists, each intent on giving unforgettable performances for the first time ever at the San Diego Performance Shell.”

“L’ATTITUDE has been described as the only gathering in the country where you can hear, interact with, learn from, and be inspired by such a robust and diverse list of participants and celebrities,” added Gary Acosta, L’ATTITUDE co-founder. “Attendees will leave with new insights, new ideas, new memories, and a new appreciation for the New Mainstream Economy in America, and how U.S. Latinos are driving it.”

Pre-registration for L’ATTITUDE 2021 is now available with the full agenda and list of participants to be announced in the coming weeks. FAIRFAX, Va., April 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ — Hispanics are the driving force behind shifts in the American demographic landscape and in popular culture. As consumers demand equality and proper representation coupled with culturally literate, responsible practices from marketers, brands must lead with culture-driven insights and centralize Hispanic marketing as a core practice for achieving sustainable market relevance and growth. The HMC 2021 Hispanic Market Guide is the authoritative source for identifying companies with trusted Hispanic marketing expertise. This guide not only serves as a valuable resource for marketers, featuring research and insights from Kantar and Nielsen, but it  also provides brands and journalists with unparalleled competitive intelligence for locating and targeting the top agencies in the market. For the first time, the guide also features a section devoted to creative, in partnership with Circulo Creativo, the only nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting creativity in the U.S. Hispanic advertising market. MIAMI, April 29, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Fortú announced the launch of its digital bank account focused on Latino and Hispanic U.S. residents who remain underserved by the “one size fits all” approach of traditional financial institutions. Fortú is building modern banking products with a Latino cultural context.

The fortú account is bringing the first holistic approach to better banking for Latinos, a distinct demographic with a higher prevalence of multigenerational families; mixed households with both immigrant and U.S.-born members; varying English vs. Spanish language preferences across generations; and a greater likelihood of maintaining financial ties with family and community across the U.S. and abroad. Traditional banking products are not designed to meet these unique, culturally contextual, household needs.

The fortú account includes the following features:

In 2020, the company raised a $5 million seed round led by Valar Ventures with participation from prominent fintech executives like Jake Gibson; co-founder of Nerdwallet; Francesco Simoneschi, CEO and co-founder of TrueLayer; Joyce Kim, Executive Director and founder of the Stellar Foundation; and Andrew Endicott, COO and co-founder of Petal.

Valar, a New York-based and fintech-focused VC firm, led the funding round. Valar is an investor in several globally prominent fintech companies including Wise, N26, Albo, Xero, and Petal.

“We’re proud to invest in fortú,” said James Fitzgerald, a founding partner with Valar Ventures. “They are by far the most experienced and best positioned team to bring world class digital banking to underserved Latino and Hispanic communities across the U.S.”

Fortú also announced Miami, FL as its corporate headquarters. “As the highest profile American city with a Latino majority and home to the most exciting emerging technology hub, Miami is clearly the best place to build a digital bank serving Latinos. We’re proud to call Miami home,” said fortú CEO, Charles Yim. “As fortú grows, we expect to create hundreds of new technology jobs in Miami over the next few years.”

“It’s very exciting to see a mission-driven business like fortú choose the City of Miami for their headquarters.
