Retirees Seek Up to $500K in Northstar Financial Services (Bermuda) Claim Against J.P. Morgan Securities

Shepherd Smith Edwards & Kantas LLP.

HOUSTON, April 27, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — A retired couple from Mexico is requesting up to $500K plus interest and costs from J.P. Morgan Securities, LLC over losses they suffered from investing in a Northstar Financial Services (Bermuda) variable annuity. Because the carrier, Northstar Bermuda, is located off-shore in Bermuda, the policy that the investors purchased was not protected in the same way as those sold by US-based carriers.

Shepherd Smith Edwards & Kantas LLP.

Now, the claimants are alleging the following: misrepresentations & omissions, unsuitable recommendations, failure to supervise, breach of contract, overconcentration, negligence & gross negligence, and breach of fiduciary duty, and other violations that resulted in their significant investment losses.

Shepherd Smith Edwards and Kantas (SSEK Law Firm at investorlawyers.com) are representing these Mexican investors in their case against J.P. Morgan Securities. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) arbitration hearing will take place in Houston, Texas.

These senior investors specifically travelled to Texas to set up a US bank account. They wanted protection for their assets from Mexico’s fluctuating currency that was being negatively affected by government and economic instability.

While it was reasonable for their J.P. Morgan Securities broker to recommend that they invest in a variable annuity — typically a safe and suitable investment for most retail investors seeking principal protection — it was unsuitable to recommend a variable annuity from Northstar Bermuda.

The fact that this was an offshore carrier automatically exposed the claimants to undue risk.

According to SSEK Law Firm attorney, Luis J. Acevedo-Bengoechea, “People from Latin America bring their assets to invest in the US seeking stability. It is reprehensible that a licensed financial advisor would then recommend a product that is held off-shore when reasonable US investments were available.”

Northstar Financial Services (Bermuda) has offered variable- and fixed-rate annuity investment products to investors, many of whom were drawn to these products because of the tax benefits offered in Bermuda.

SSEK Law Firm is looking into similar complaints brought by customers of Ocean Financial Services, Bankoh Investment Services, J.P. Morgan Securities, Truist Investment Services and other broker-dealers who may have unsuitably recommended these products to their customers.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital announces largest strategic expansion in its history targeting pediatric catastrophic diseases globally

0

MEMPHIS, Tenn., April 27, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is launching the largest strategic investment in its nearly 60-year history, committing $11.5 billion during the next six years to accelerate research and treatment globally for children with catastrophic diseases.

Experience the interactive Multichannel News Release here: https://www.multivu.com/players/English/8743452-st-jude-strategic-expansion-pediatric-catastrophic-diseases/

The Six-Year St. Jude Strategic Plan, approved March 25, 2021, by the St. Jude Board of Governors, focuses on the expansion of patient care and clinical and laboratory-based research related to pediatric catastrophic illnesses, including work in cancer, blood disorders, neurological diseases and infectious diseases. The plan calls for an additional 1,400 jobs; the expenditure of $1.9 billion in new construction, renovation and capital needs; and the development of new research areas.

“The plan is ambitious, and its goals are far-reaching,” said James R. Downing, M.D., St. Jude president and CEO. “We’re committing substantial resources to broaden scientific understanding, raise survival rates, improve quality of life, and connect researchers worldwide in the quest to find cures and save children with cancer and other deadly diseases.”

The endeavor builds on the research hospital’s prior strategic plan, which at the time was the largest expansion in the institution’s history and resulted in $7 billion in investments. Within the past six years, St. Jude has advanced fundamental, clinical and translational research, among its many milestones. Globally, access to quality care—once a dream for children in low- and middle-income countries—is beginning to be realized through its reimagined international outreach efforts that reach seven regions of the world. On campus, St. Jude accepted nearly 20% more new cancer patients; increased faculty by 30% and staff by 23%; and embarked on several large-scale construction projects.

The new plan continues this momentum by concentrating on five areas: fundamental science, childhood cancer, pediatric catastrophic diseases, global impact and workforce and workplace culture. Highlights across these areas include the following:

Building a workforce to speed cures for children
Under the plan, St. Jude will hire nearly 70 new faculty members, plus supporting laboratory staff, to work in basic, translational and clinical research across 22 departments. These investigators will have the freedom to pursue the type of conceptually driven research that leads to tomorrow’s clinical advances.

Investing in the intersection of science and technology
During the next six years, St. Jude will invest more than $250 million to expand state-of-the-art technology and resources available to scientists and clinicians in their search to understand why pediatric catastrophic diseases arise, spread and resist treatments. These investments will include:

  • Creating a Cryo-Electron Tomography Center to determine the atomic structure of molecules in their native states within human cells
  • Establishing a Center of Excellence in Advanced Microscopy to build the next generation of microscopes that explore cells in ways previously unimaginable
  • Expanding data science staff and the digital infrastructure necessary to become a world leader in the application of data science to biological discovery in normal and disease states

Creating a brighter future for children with cancer
St. Jude will invest $3.7 billion during the next six years to expand cancer-focused research and related clinical care. These efforts will center on raising survival rates for the highest-risk cancers and for children with relapsed diseases, while simultaneously improving quality of life for pediatric cancer survivors. The investments will include:

  • Accelerating preclinical and clinical testing of new therapeutic agents so the most promising agents can rapidly move from clinical investigation to standard of care
  • Expanding large-scale, collaborative trials to reach more childhood cancer patients across the U.S. and around the world
  • Creating a new Translational Immunology and Immunotherapy Initiative (TI3)—an inter-departmental collaboration focused on expanding the use of cellular-based cancer immunotherapy as curative treatments for pediatric solid tumors and brain tumors

Finding cures and saving children everywhere
In the U.S., more than 80% of children diagnosed with cancer will be cured. In contrast, 80% of children with cancer live in limited-resource countries, where a mere 20% survive their disease. To address this, St. Jude will more than triple its investment in its international efforts coordinated through St. Jude Global and the St. Jude Global Alliance during the next six years. This represents an investment of more than $470 million. Global initiatives include:

  • Expanding educational programs to train the workforce needed to treat childhood cancer worldwide; strengthening the health care systems required to deliver that care; and bolstering regional and global programs to create the research infrastructure necessary to continually improve the quality of care in resource-limited settings
  • Creating seven international operational hubs staffed by St. Jude workers to effectively manage the St. Jude Global Alliance, a network of more than 140 institutions across 50-plus countries
  • Developing a multimillion-dollar Pediatric Cancer Global Drug Access Program—in collaboration with World Health Organization, other U.N. agencies and international organizations—to distribute an uninterrupted supply of anti-cancer drugs for childhood cancer treatment in low- and middle-income countries

Beyond cancer: Investing in other pediatric catastrophic diseases
Under the plan, St. Jude will expand research and treatment programs to advance cures for childhood catastrophic diseases. The $1.1 billion, six-year investment includes work in nonmalignant hematological diseases, such as sickle cell disease; a new laboratory-based research program in infectious diseases that affect children worldwide; and a new research and clinical program to better understand and treat pediatric neurological diseases.

Fostering a culture and environment that propel progress
The plan outlines several strategies to ensure St. Jude remains a place where teamwork flourishes; internal and external collaboration thrives; and employees can make a difference in the lives of children. These will include:

  • Expanding the St. Jude Research Collaboratives program from funding five to 11 teams of scientists worldwide through a more than $100 million investment
  • Enriching future biomedical research pipelines for potential employees by creating experiences for high school and college students in science
  • Expanding the established St. Jude blue-sky process, which solicits mission-related, game-changing ideas outside of the strategic plan, by $180 million
  • Building and supporting best-in-class environments that help employees advance the institution’s life-saving work and offer patients and their families a home away from home
    • The $1.3 billion in new construction and renovations will include completion of The Domino’s Village, a family housing facility with one-, two- and three-bedroom units; Family Commons, a quality of life space with patient family services from school to tech support; and the Advanced Research Center—and construction of outpatient, clinical office and administrative buildings and parking garages.

The multi-phase expansion plan is fueled almost entirely by steadily increasing donor contributions generated by ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude.

“We are making our biggest financial investment ever—during a pandemic—because the public, our donors, have demonstrated their commitment to us,” said Richard C. Shadyac Jr., ALSAC president and CEO. “It’s an incredible display of loyalty and purpose, and the power of people coming together to help the most vulnerable in our society: sick children.”

Private fundraising conducted by ALSAC is the organization’s lifeline because pediatric cancer research typically receives a disproportionately low share of government research dollars. Of the approximately $6 billion distributed annually by the National Cancer Institute, only an estimated 4% targets pediatric cancers. It is estimated that 87% of funds to sustain and grow St. Jude over the next six years will come from public donations. The St. Jude model is unique in that patients never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food. That model was established by ALSAC and St. Jude founder Danny Thomas, who believed in equal access to medical care and driving research advances.

“As we move forward with this strategic plan, our mission—to advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment—remains at the forefront of everything we do,” Downing said. “The mission serves as our compass, and the plan serves as our guide for the journey ahead.”

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is leading the way the world understands, treats and cures childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. It is the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. Treatments developed at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to 80% since the hospital opened more than 50 years ago. St. Jude freely shares the breakthroughs it makes, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing and food — because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Median Texas home price up 13.4% during first quarter of 2021

AUSTIN, Texas, April 22, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The median sales price of homes in Texas reached $274,300 in the first quarter this year, an increase of 13.4% over the same period last year, according to the 2021-Q1 Texas Quarterly Housing Report released today by Texas Realtors.

Texas Association of Realtors logo.

“The demand for housing in Texas remained strong despite the winter storm in February and the pandemic,” said Marvin Jolly, chairman of Texas Realtors. “With a low supply of homes for sale, though, prices in most areas have gone up significantly, and competition among buyers has increased as well.”

During the first quarter of this year, 84,464 homes were sold in Texas, jumping 10.1% compared to the first quarter of 2020. One-third of homes sold were in the $200,000$299,000 price range, the largest percentage of any price range.

Luis Torres, Ph.D., research economist with the Texas Real Estate Research Center at Texas A&M University, commented, “Depleted inventory is the greatest challenge to Texas’ housing market, pushing up prices at elevated rates as demand remains strong, making it one of the most competitive housing markets for homebuyers since the 2006-07 housing boom. Rising mortgage rates in 2021 combined with recent rapid price growth will slow demand and, consequently, price growth to more sustainable levels.”

Active listings declined 53% from last year and stood at 43,542 homes for sale at the end of the first quarter of 2021. Homes spent an average of 47 days on the market before going under contract, which is 20 days less than the first quarter of 2020. The average total time from hitting the market until the sale closed was 87 days, down 13 days from the previous year. Housing supply in Texas decreased from 3 months in the first quarter of 2020 to 1.3 months of inventory in the first quarter this year.

Chairman Jolly concluded, “Many homes are attracting multiple offers and selling for thousands above asking price. Price plays a key role in winning offers, of course, but other considerations can come into play as well. Realtors have been helping their buyers and sellers sort through their options to help them achieve their real estate goals during a market that presents some unique challenges.”

QUEENSBORO FC HAS A PLACE TO CALL HOME. YORK COLLEGE OF THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK ANNOUNCED AS SITE FOR CLUB’S SOCCER SPECIFIC STADIUM, THE FIRST EVER BUILT BY A PRO TEAM IN NEW YORK CITY.

NEW YORK, April 27, 2021 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Queensboro FC (QBFC), an expansion club of the United Soccer League (USL), announced today that York College of The City University of New York (CUNY) will be the site of its home games for the inaugural season in Spring 2022. This will be the first ever purpose-built stadium, specifically designed for soccer, by any professional sports team in New York City. The announcement has been a long time coming for many fans, who have been highly anticipating the news and are eager to welcome a home soccer team to Queens. Soccer is the #1 sport across the 150+ nationalities which make up the borough, and you can witness that passion every weekend when thousands of players gather at Flushing Meadows Corona Park, an iconic Queen’s destination for local amateur soccer teams and their families. With QBFC, New York’s vast immigrant community finally has a local pro team to call their own. With the stadium, they can truly say it’s their ‘home away from home’.

QUEENSBORO FC HAS A PLACE TO CALL HOME. YORK COLLEGE OF THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK ANNOUNCED AS SITE FOR CLUB’S SOCCER SPECIFIC STADIUM, THE FIRST EVER BUILT BY A PRO TEAM IN NEW YORK CITY.

Pursuant to a Summer 2020 Request for Proposals, CUNY awarded QBFC the contract to construct and operate a stadium on the York College campus to support the university’s academic and athletic mission, as well as enhance the college experience for its students, create local jobs, grow neighborhood businesses, and develop the surrounding area of Jamaica, Queens. In addition to hosting QBFC practices and competition play, the stadium will also serve as the venue for York College’s commencement, CUNY Athletic Conference tournament games, and other free or ticketed events. Throughout the duration of the partnership, there will be ongoing exchange between university and club, such as the joint development of class curriculum on topics surrounding health, wellness, and sports education, as well as the integration of QBFC front office, coaches, and players as guest speakers. There will also be community initiatives hosted by QBFC and York College, especially related to youth and student development in the form of seminars, clinics, and internships.

Staying true to the club’s vision to deliver an innovative and unique fan experience, the 7,500-seat modular stadium will be designed in partnership with Populous, a leading global architecture firm that has created some of the world’s best sporting facilities. Special attention has been made to ensure the stadium adheres to the highest standards and best practices of a post-COVID era, with frictionless commerce along with other health, safety, and sanitation protocols. The pitch will be a turf playing surface, which will allow the venue to be a year-round asset for sports, entertainment and community events.

To celebrate this announcement, QBFC has launched The 1909 Club for its fans, named in honor of the Queensborough Bridge, which opened in 1909 and is an integral part of QBFC’s crest design. To officially kick-off ticket sales for the 2022 inaugural season, QBFC is offering a limited-time promotion for the first 1,909 people to place a deposit, which grants lifelong membership in the 1909 Club. Fans can place a $25 deposit for the first-rights opportunity to purchase season tickets, up to six seats and choose their seat location in the new stadium. The deposit will apply as a credit towards the total cost of their season ticket plan. Seat selections are made in the order of deposit placement, therefore the club encourages fans to place their orders early by visiting the Queensboro FC website.

“Today is an exciting day for Queensboro FC. The announcement of our home stadium site at York College represents a bold new chapter for professional sports in New York City,” says Jonathan Krane, Owner of Queensboro FC.  “More importantly, we are proud to deliver our QBFC fans a dedicated soccer specific venue, built by and for the Queens community, bringing us all together to celebrate the beautiful game.”

“The City University of New York is proud to partner with Queensboro FC in bringing a professional soccer stadium to York College in Queens, a place world-renowned for its cultural and linguistic diversity, and for its love of el fútbol,” said CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. “This new stadium is a great addition to the York College campus and will benefit not only CUNY students and the local community, but all New Yorkers and fans of soccer.”

York College is honored to be the host site for Queensboro FC’s home stadium,” says Berenecea Johnson Eanes, President of York College. “We believe their contributions as a community-led sporting organization will greatly advance our facilities, our campus experience, and our neighborhoods. This project will showcase the importance of private and public sectors coming together, and working together, to celebrate diversity and bridge communities.”

“Sports bring people together from all walks of life, to create shared experiences in support of a common cause, and soccer is a passion point that connects New Yorkers with one another,” said Congressman Gregory Meeks (NY-05). “Queensboro FC’s stadium at York College will bring sustainable, multi-generational benefits to the community, and we believe the club will continue to work hard for the people of Queens.  We are proud to have QBFC as the newest professional sports team in New York City.”

Queens is the home for sports. From baseball to tennis, and now we are proud to add soccer to the mix. I am thrilled Queensboro FC will have York College to call home, and can’t wait for Queens families to enjoy soccer games once the stadium is completed. Thank you to CUNY, my fellow elected officials and all the partners for making this happen. Can’t wait to cheer on our soccer stars here in the World’s Borough!” said Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, Jr.

“In 2022, Queens will be the epicenter of something positive, fútbol. For a long time, Queens has been the soccer mecca for so many of our communities, taking their passion for this sport to our local spaces like Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Now our very own Queens team, QBFC, will have a home at York College for soccer fans to enjoy their favorite pastime without leaving the borough. Thank you to CUNY and York College for making this stadium a reality. I look forward to joining futbol fans like me to cheer on our Queens team and soccer players,” said NYC Council Member Francisco Moya.

“The soccer community in Queens is finally getting what they’ve always wanted – their own team and their own stadium,” says Aly Wagner, former US Women’s National Team star and currently part of Queensboro FC ownership group. “We have worked really hard over the past two years to bring QBFC to life, and this stadium represents a huge step forward. It will serve as a physical manifestation, and a leading example, of how to build a modern-day soccer team in an ever-changing world of sports and entertainment.”
