National Alliance Releases Report on How Charter Schools Serve Students During COVID-19 School Closures

0

WASHINGTON, Aug. 25, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Today, the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools released a report conducted by Public Impact, Learning in Real Time: How Charter Schools Serve Students During COVID-19 Closures, that compares how charter schools and district schools served students during COVID-19 closures. While a lot has been written about the response of larger charter school networks, this report takes a closer look at how the typical single site school or small charter network responded to COVID-19.

The research showed that on average, when compared to districts, charter schools had stronger expectations for teachers to provide direct instruction, provide real-time instruction, and to check in with students and families. They also monitored student attendance more closely than their district counterparts. Charter schools were equally as likely to require the distribution of devices for online learning, however they appeared less likely to provide home or community internet hotspots.

“As we rethink basic functions in our lives right now – like how we shop for groceries, work, and socialize – the best way to educate our students is the greatest challenge of all. Within the K-12 community, there are a handful of examples that stand out for their outstanding performance and adaptability during the pandemic: charter schools are one of them,” said Nina Rees, president and CEO of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. “This report confirms what we have said all along. Charter schools are innovative public schools that are student-centered, and their autonomous and flexible model empowers them to meet the unique needs of their students. We hope today’s report is a critical reminder to Congress, and to everyone else, that we need more charter schools, more equitable funding for all public schools, and more federal relief for K-12 education so that all students can be equipped for distance learning.”

In a recent poll by Morning Consult, 54 percent of respondents said public education is a top tier issue. Unfortunately, it is not getting the attention it deserves. Eighty-one percent of respondents believed a student’s neighborhood and family income impacts the likelihood of their success – a challenge charter schools, which are zone-free, tuition-free public schools, can address.

The report examined a nationally representative sample of 356 charter schools. The analysis focused on eight indicators that allowed national comparisons between charter schools and district schools: feedback on student work, formal grading, teacher check-in, operator delegated distance learning, attendance tracking, instructional minutes recommended, device distribution, and hotspot access.

In addition to the data analysis, the report profiles charter schools that shifted operations to maintain student-school connections and center on student support. The five trends across all the schools were: prioritizing relationships and outreach, expanding the role of the school, continuing academic learning, adapting how learning happens, and implementing a feedback loop. The report profiles a geographically and racially diverse group of schools, including stories from communities in New York and Washington state that were at the epicenter of the COVID-19 infection, as well as schools in other communities across the country.

COVID-19 Alcohol Deregulation Should Not Become the New Normal

Public Health Not Public Drinking Press Briefing

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 25, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Health and community advocates from around the country are holding a virtual press event Wednesday, August 26, 2020, to send strong messages to the nation’s Governors that #COVID19 alcohol deregulations are dangerous, place alcohol industry profits above public health and safety, and must not become the new normal.

What: Virtual Press Event with 2nd channel simultaneous Spanish translation
When: Wednesday August 26, 2020, 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (PT)
Where: Zoom Call – media only, pre-registration required
Streaming live to the general public on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter
Who:

Why: As the Coronavirus continues to rage across the United States, alcohol-related health problems are also on the rise. Alcohol consumption has increased dramatically under COVID as deregulation has made it easier than ever to purchase. This indicates a serious failure by many state Governors and top state agencies to acknowledge and address public health and safety concerns by often declaring alcohol sales “essential” during the pandemic. The catastrophic annual alcohol-related harms that already plague the country have for the most part been dismissed along with the rise in those harms being experienced now that alcohol was deemed essential.

In many states, public health and safety have taken a back seat to “economic recovery”, and the drivers of this dangerous alcohol deregulation are GUI – Government Under the Influence. Since the beginning of the pandemic shutdown, under the dubious guise of economic relief,  states have deregulated and relaxed enforcement to help alcohol licensed establishments continue to operate. These dangerous, revenue-driven policy changes have promoted increased alcohol sales and consumption during the stay-at-home orders. They include allowing home deliveries with ineffective age verification, cocktails-to-go, expanding sales into public spaces, and the normalization of drinking during a public health emergency of massive proportions.

The participants in this virtual press briefing will discuss the negative impacts of COVID-19 alcohol deregulation in their states and some of the harms associated with increased alcohol consumption: impaired judgement, financial difficulties, increasing domestic violence, increasing vulnerability to Coronavirus by weakening the immune system, and the general negative effects on mental health.

This event launches a national CALL to ACTION to give constituents of all states a channel to send messages to their Governors asking them to closely re-examine their state’s relationship with alcohol, acknowledge that excessive alcohol use is No. 3 on the list of preventable causes of death, and insure that alcohol deregulation is not the new normal by ending COVID-19 regulatory rollbacks for economic relief as soon as possible. It’s time to make public health essential, not public drinking.

Sato Wins as Honda Dominates the Indianapolis 500

0
Takuma Sato (center) led a Honda sweep of the top four finishing positions at today's Indianapolis 500. Scott Dixon (#9, top) finished second, followed by Graham Rahal (#15) and Santino Ferrucci.

SPEEDWAY, Indiana, Aug. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Takuma Sato passed a previously dominant Scott Dixon with just 15 laps remaining in today’s Indianapolis 500, and went on to score his second win at the famed “Brickyard” in a race dominated by Honda teams and drivers.

Takuma Sato (center) led a Honda sweep of the top four finishing positions at today's Indianapolis 500. Scott Dixon (#9, top) finished second, followed by Graham Rahal (#15) and Santino Ferrucci.

Although he led only twice for a total of 27 laps, Sato’s Rahal Letterman Lanigan Honda was fast when it counted, in the run from the last round of pit stops to the checkered flag.  Exiting the pits in second to Dixon, Sato swept into the lead on lap 185, then held off several attempts by Dixon to repass as the pair worked their way through lapped traffic.  The race was decided on Lap 196 of the scheduled 200, when Spencer Pigot crashed hard exiting Turn 4, leading the race to end under the caution flag.  The win is the second at Indy for Sato, following his initial “500” triumph in 2017.

Prior to the final pit stops, Dixon had dominated the day in his Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, leading a race-high 111 laps as the championship leader sought his own second Indy victory.  Starting in the middle of the front row in the 33-car field, Dixon took the lead at the Green Flag and went on to control much of the 200-lap contest, especially after Alexander Rossi, in a strong running Andretti Autosport Honda, crashed out of the race on Lap 143.  Prior to his contact with the wall, Rossi led four times for a total of 17 laps as he and Dixon edged away from the field in the middle portion of the race.

But both Rahal Letterman Lanigan Hondas came on strong in the closing laps, with Sato’s teammate Graham Rahal closing the gap to the lead pair in the final laps to finish third.  After a disappointing qualifying effort, Santino Ferrucci conducted an exciting late-race effort of his own, finishing fourth to complete a Honda 1-2-3-4 sweep at the finish.

Honda drivers claimed eight of the top-10 finishing positions, with James Hinchcliffe recovering from a clutch problem encountered in his second pit stop to finish seventh, with his Andretti Autosport teammate Colton Herta eighth.  Jack Harvey had his best Indy finish to date with a ninth-place result for Meyer Shank Racing; while Ryan Hunter-Reay rounded out the top 10 in his Andretti Autosport Honda.

Next
The string of five consecutive NTT INDYCAR SERIES oval races continues next weekend as drivers and teams head 150 miles southwest to WorldWide Technolgy Raceway near St. Louis, Missouri for a pair of 200-lap races Saturday, August 29 and Sunday, August 30.

Honda Racing social media content and videos from this weekend’s pair of races 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 will be available on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/HondaRacingHPD) and on Twitter at  (https://twitter.com/HondaRacing_HPD).  Produced by the CoForce Digital Media, YouTube video packages can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/HondaRacingHPDTV.

Quotes
Takuma Sato (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda) Started 3rd, finished 1st; second Indy 500 win; 13th victory for Honda at Indianapolis: “I think we had the best car. Only we were a lap short from Dixie [Scott Dixon] in terms of the fuel strategy, and [making fuel mileage to the finish] was a little tight. I couldn’t use max power to switch back and forth. And Dixon kept coming through Turn 4 [on the final green flag lap] and I was just able to hold him off. This is unbelievable. Everyone did a hell of a job. HPD and Honda gave us a lot of power and a lot of fuel mileage.”

Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) Started 2nd, finished 2nd; led race-high 111 laps; increased his mid-season championship points lead to 84 over Josef Newgarden [335-251]: “This is a hard one to swallow. On fuel mileage, I really can’t see how [Takuma] Sato was going to make it [prior to the caution that ended the race]. We pitted a lap later, and the [fuel mileage] numbers they had to get, it was going to be very difficult. I thought they were going to throw a red flag [following a late-race crash by Spencer Pigot], which would have been interesting for the last four or five laps. Huge congrats to Takuma. He drove his pants off today. Rahal Letterman Lanigan, they were super fast, obviously finishing first and third. It was good day for Honda. I want to give a massive thank you to them. We’re very proud to be powered by HPD and Honda, and it’s nice to get some [championship] points. But it’s hard when the win slips away like that.”

Santino Ferrucci (Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan Honda) Started 19th, finished 4th“It was just an incredible race. The SealMaster Honda was insane today. The guys worked really hard on pit lane, on the timing stand and the strategy was perfect.  I’m just really happy, after two incredibly long weeks of focusing on the car, we ended really good. During the first pit stop I got caught in neutral, and it was like a blessing in disguise. It set us way back, but the momentum we had just carried us. On the next restart [after a caution flag] we went from 25th right back into the top-10. It was where we needed to be and we just fought our way from there into the top-four.”

Ted Klaus (President, Honda Performance Development) on today’s Indianapolis 500: “This was a very satisfying win.  On behalf of every HPD team member and everyone back at HPD in Santa Clarita – who have all been pushing hard since last year’s race – thank you!  Congratulations to Takuma Sato, Graham Rahal and the entire Rahal Letterman Lanigan team for their one-three finish today; to Scott Dixon and Chip Ganassi Racing for his dominant run to lead 111 laps and second-place result; and to all of our partner teams and their great drivers.  Together we led all but 22 laps of today’s race, and scored an incredible 13th ‘500’ win for Honda.”

J.R. Dunn Jewelers Epic Billboard Proposal Giveaway

LIGHTHOUSE POINT, Fla., Aug. 24, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Family owned luxury jeweler, J.R. Dunn Jewelers, launched a giveaway right before Valentine’s Day this year, just before COVID-19 pandemic virtually shut down South Florida. J.R. Dunn wanted to do something special and help one lucky winner “Say it Big” and propose in such a huge way—in front of millions of people, on the busiest roadway in South Florida, I-95.

Patrick said it big and proposed on a billboard on I-95 in South Florida! Credit: Christina Cernik Photography

Patrick Callahan of Delray Beach, FL was the lucky winner. It was announced in March, but unfortunately COVID-19 forced him to reschedule his elaborate proposal multiple times. Patrick was proposing to the love of his life, Taylor, after six years of being together. One weekend in August, Taylor thought she was going for a birthday weekend trip down to the Florida Keys, but they made a pit stop at the Deering Estate in Miami—a beautiful oceanside historical 1920’s estate and garden in Miami once home to Charles Deering. At the center of the Deering Estate exterior along the oceanside are two beautiful rows of palm trees, extending out onto the ocean. Patrick led Taylor to the center of this beautiful setting and proposed to her with a beautiful solitaire diamond engagement ring. She said yes!

After a celebration, the couple was driving up to a surprise dinner with all their closest family and friends, when they pass J.R. Dunn’s billboard reading “Taylor, will you marry me? – Patrick” with one of their most coveted pictures together. Taylor was in absolute awe of the endless surprises Patrick had planned. Watch their proposal video to see her speechless reaction as they drove up! And it doesn’t stop there… He even arranged a lift to take them up for a photoshoot in front of the billboard!

They continued the proposal with a weeklong journey down through the Keys, stopping at well-known locations along the way including the Cheeca Lodge & Spa in Islamorada, all the way down to their final destination of Key West, all with little surprises and family members along the way.

Patrick definitely “said it big” and proposed to Taylor in such a special way. A huge congratulations to the future Mr. and Mrs. Callahan and cheers to many more special moments like this epic South Florida proposal.

Humanitarian Aid arrives in Cuba only to be blocked from its rightful owners

0
Fundacion para la democracia panamericana

MIAMI, Aug. 24, 2020 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The board of directors of the Fundación para la Democracia Panamericana, together with Rosa María Payá and City of Miami Mayor, Francis Suarez, sent a letter, found below, on Friday, August 14, to twenty-seven members of the United States Congress, including Bernie Sanders and Karen Bass. The letter was written to request their support in obtaining the release of humanitarian aid sent to Cuba, specifically following a letter they sent to Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo. The aid has been arbitrarily withheld by the authorities of the Cuban regime on the Island, despite the serious crisis that the country is facing. The letter to the members of Congress is signed by more than 30 citizens, churches and organizations of the United States and Cuba involved in the Solidarity among Brothers effort as organizers or recipients.

Our letter follows:

August 14, 2020

Dear Congress member,

We are U.S. and Cuban citizens who appreciate the interest you have recently expressed in the “health and safety of not only Cubans but Americans and others in the Caribbean region,” in a letter to Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, signed in May 2020 by 27 members of the U.S. Senate and the House, including yourself.

Taking your words into consideration, we urge you to support the demand that all the humanitarian aid we collected in the United States in May 2020, which was later sent to Cuba with the help of Christian churches through regular channels, be delivered immediately and without further governmental intervention to its legitimate recipients in Cuba. This aid has been arbitrarily detained by the Cuban authorities upon its arrival to the Island.

In the hopes of mitigating the impact of the crisis being suffered by the Cuban people, aggravated by COVID-19, we, along with hundreds of other citizens, contributed to the donation drive Solidaridad Entre Hermanos / Solidarity Among Brothers, in Miami, Florida, where thousands of pounds of humanitarian aid were collected in May 2020. This effort was conducted with the intention to provide as many products as possible to our brothers and sisters in Cuba, so that the most vulnerable families can maintain appropriate hygiene, as well as feed themselves substantially, during the current crisis. At least 15,000 Cuban families managed to register to receive this assistance on our website, despite having to bypass the cyber-attacks by Cuban authorities.

Cuba is in crisis. The rule of the single-party communist government, that exerts centralized control upon all aspects of Cuban society, has not only caused a dire humanitarian crisis, but has also increased political repression. Every day, due to the shortages of food and basic needs, the people of Cuba must stand in long lines, which eventually become crowds, in order to buy whatever is offered by the Cuban State, making it impossible to take safety measures against the Coronavirus pandemic. To make matters worse, the Cuban State is now selling several basic-need products in hard currency, making it impossible for the majority of Cuban families to have access to them given that all salaries are paid in national currency.

As Cubans of the diaspora, our ability to directly help our families in Cuba should be without restrictions from any government. In the spirit of your statements in the aforementioned letter, which emphasizes that government interference with humanitarian efforts like ours is “dangerous and contrary to our longstanding tradition of not politicizing the delivery of humanitarian aid,” we hope to have your support in our efforts to deliver these goods to their rightful recipients, since “in such an unprecedented emergency caused by a deadly virus that is so easily transmissible, public health and safety must take precedence.”

This initiative is not of a political nature, but it is a people-to-people humanitarian effort, which was not met with any obstacles from the U.S. State Department. It is in this regard that we call upon you to use your influential platform in order to stay true to your words as government officials, and to please demand that the supplies provided by Solidaridad Entre Hermanos / Solidarity Among Brothers, which have been  detained by the Cuban authorities―despite the fact that we fully complied with the Cuban law―be immediately released and delivered to their rightful recipients.

Specifically, our request is that you support us in demanding the Cuban State to:

  1. Remove all arbitrary barriers that are being imposed to prevent the delivery of the goods;
  2. and allow the members of the church community, the rightful owners of the goods, as well as other people of good will in Cuban civil society, to distribute the humanitarian assistance without interference.

I appreciate your assistance and request that you please send a response if you are able to help us with this critical issue during these trying times.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration of this request.

Sincerely,

Dr. Omar Vento, Rosa María Payá & Victor Pujals
