Dallas ISD, Toyota And SMU Collaborate To Support Future STEM-focused School In West Dallas

DALLAS, Sept. 7, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD), Toyota USA Foundation and SMU have joined together to collaborate on the creation of a new and innovative STEM-focused school in west Dallas.

The aim is to inspire and prepare students for the next generation of STEM jobs through curricula that is project-based and business-aligned.
“This is an exciting opportunity for our students and families of west Dallas as this unique public private partnership comes together,” said Dallas ISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. “STEM jobs are the wave of the future, and Toyota and SMU’s contribution is a major investment in shaping the next generation. This is a significant shift in education, and we’re grateful to these incredible partners.”
Toyota USA Foundation is granting $2 million to SMU’s Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development, which will develop curricula, advise on state-of-the-art educational practices, provide professional development for teachers, coordinate nonprofits operating in the area, and monitor and evaluate the program. The future school will be operated and staffed by the Dallas ISD. The Office of Transformation and Innovation will co-facilitate the design of the school in collaboration with School Leadership.
The collaboration will also bring together nonprofits, including groups already working with Dallas ISD through the SMU Simmons School program, The School Zone, as well as Toyota Motor North America and Toyota Financial Services’ partners to address community issues like literacy, nutrition, transportation and after–school care – each vital to creating successful outcomes for the community.
“Collectively, our goal is to create a brighter future for students, help families become more resilient, and create a community and school model that can be replicated,” said Mike Goss, president of Toyota USA Foundation. “We want to help increase access to opportunity, connecting students to the millions of STEM jobs that exist today, and the many more that will be created as industry advances.”
This partnership developed as a result of numerous requests from the community for STEM offerings within the Pinkston High School feeder pattern.
“This partnership advances our efforts currently underway in west Dallas, with a holistic approach that lifts the community and provides opportunity for students,” said SMU President R. Gerald Turner. “Evidence-based education is the foundation for everything we do in the Simmons School, and we look forward to the opportunity to provide resources and research that underscore the success of the school.”
Following an inclusive planning phase, the next two academic years will focus on curriculum and professional development for faculty.
“Everything is still on the table, including decisions about curricula and which wrap-around services will be provided through the school by community partners,” said SMU Simmons School Dean Stephanie L. Knight. “This announcement is meant to let all the stakeholders, parents included, know that we want their input at every level as we move forward.”
The school will begin a phased opening beginning fall 2021.

Marriott International to Provide Personal Alert Devices for Housekeepers and Other Hotel Associates Across the US and Canada
BETHESDA, Maryland, Sept. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — As part of its ongoing focus on safety, Marriott International (NASDAQ: MAR) today announced it is ramping up the deployment of alert devices for housekeepers and other on-property associates allowing them to discretely summon help if they feel harassed in any way, need quick support or spot a guest in distress.
Further signaling its ongoing commitment to safety, the company will be making associate alert devices a new standard across its portfolio of more than 5,000 managed and franchised hotels in the United States and Canada and is exploring similar technology solutions to meet the needs of its global hotel portfolio and workforce. The associate alert technology rollout is projected to continue through 2020 as the company and its franchise partners fine-tune and tailor installations at individual sites ranging from high rise city properties to sprawling resorts to suburban hotels.
After more than a year of field testing and modifying solutions based on input from housekeepers and safety and security experts, Marriott International and its franchise partners are expanding and accelerating the rollout of associate alert technology, including devices that can pinpoint the location of the alert issuer, which has proven effective in scenarios where rapid response is critical and in hotel settings which can be more than a million square feet in size.
The move sets a high bar within the industry and was applauded by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA), which today convened leaders from multiple member hotel companies committed to protecting employees as well as the millions of guests who stay in hotels each day.
“No one should ever be fearful doing their job, least of all associates on-property who are so vital to the success of our company and our industry,” said Arne Sorenson, President and Chief Executive Officer, Marriott International. “The safety of everyone at our properties is always a top priority as is deterring and combatting harassment of any kind. I’m deeply proud to say our entire industry is unified around these important goals.”
At testing locations to date, many housekeepers have expressed relief and described heightened peace of mind, not because they’ve had to use the device, but because they know they can if trouble arises.
“I’ve spoken with housekeepers who describe the feeling of walking into a guest room and not knowing what’s on the other side of the door,” said Erika Alexander, Chief Lodging Services Officer, The Americas, for Marriott International and a former Marriott Hotel General Manager. “Realizing they now have a device right at their fingertips is automatically empowering and it reminds them they’re not alone. I hear the relief and confidence in their voices, I see it in their faces. Not only does it make them feel better, it makes their families feel better about the work environment they’re in. That’s why we’re doing this.”
Marriott housekeepers echo this sentiment. “It’s a big relief for the whole family. First of all, for me being on the floor late and for my husband and kids. We don’t have to worry about mommy, she’s never going to be in danger. She’s working in a safe environment,” shared Latifa E., a Marriott Housekeeper.
“Everybody is happy in the hotel about this change, because everybody feels more safe,” said Carlos C., a Marriott Housekeeping Aid.
The associate alert device puts another tool in the hands of Marriott’s tens of thousands of associates and complements the company’s regular safety and security training and protocols. Together, these tools collectively foster a safer environment in which associates are better able to care for each other and hotel guests.
“The real magic happens when it all comes together, and everybody does their part to create a safe work environment and guest experience,” emphasized Alexander. “Putting people first is never going to change as a Marriott core value, but what that looks like and what tools and resources are available to us will evolve over time. In this phase, we’re dialing up on safety and security.”
NOTE TO EDITORS: B-roll package includes:
- Housekeepers at work with the alert device
- Close-ups of housekeeper activating device and summoning help
- Security action shots, including hotel security officer arriving on-scene to assist housekeeper
- Team training session with head of hotel security giving product demo
- Housekeeper, security expert & executive soundbites

G6 Hospitality announces enhanced team member safety initiatives
DALLAS, Sept. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — G6 Hospitality LLC, the parent company of Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands in the United States and Canada, today announced a series of new and enhanced programs and policies to help ensure team member safety on property and across function areas.

This autumn, the company will begin providing personal safety devices (PSDs) to all team members at its corporate owned and managed hotels, with the intent to have the devices in place by end of March 2019. All team members on duty will receive a PSD that emits a dual siren alarm with multiple means of activation. G6 Hospitality will be the first in the economy lodging sector to provide PSDs to its team members across all functions at its hotels.
“People are the heart of this business and the single greatest asset to G6 Hospitality. That is why we are committed to the well-being, peace of mind and safety of our team members and guests, and we continue to take steps to improve that experience,” said Rob Palleschi, CEO, G6 Hospitality. “We are proud to partner with the American Hotel & Lodging Association and other member brands in this important safety initiative. These PSDs will provide another layer of security for our team members, in addition to the other measures we have in place to ensure their safety, including written policies against harassment and violence in the workplace, multi-lingual training to help team members identify and report harassment and violence, and a confidential employee hotline.”
Also this year, the company will introduce anti-human trafficking training to corporate, field and property team members. The company partnered with the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) and Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking (BEST) to provide management team members important insights to help property team members better understand and combat the issue of human trafficking. Additionally, the company developed its own training for all property team members to understand how to effectively intervene and identify potential trafficking situations to protect each other, guests and the community.
“With the new anti-trafficking training and personal safety devices, we are re-emphasizing our commitment to our team members and guests,” said Palleschi. “We will continue to review and evolve our policies, procedures and brand standards and identify new and emerging practices and technologies to ensure that team member safety is always at the heart of our operations.”
The company plans to provide guidance to its franchise community, in the form of brand standards, recommended policies and product sourcing support for the purchase and implementation of personal safety devices, with the intent that all franchisees will have them by the end of 2019.
Today’s announcement reflects the commitment made by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA). Earlier today, the hotel industry association announced its 5-Star Promise, a pledge to provide hotel employees across the U.S. with personal safety devices and commit to enhanced policies, trainings and resources that together are aimed at preventing and responding to sexual harassment and assault.

Guatemala and Colombia Compared in Meeting Between Dionisio Gutiérrez and Former President of Colombia Andrés Pastrana
BOGOTA, Colombia, Sept. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — In a recent meeting in Bogota, Colombia, Dr. Dionisio Gutiérrez, Guatemalan philanthropist, sociologist, and president of the Fundación Libertad y Desarrollo, discussed important issues regarding his home country of Guatemala with Andrés Pastrana, the former President of Colombia from 1998 to 2002. The meeting was part of an ongoing exchange of concepts and ideas by Gutiérrez with well-known political figures throughout Latin America.

According to Gutiérrez, Pastrana explained the complex issues Colombia faced at the onset of his presidency, particularly, the incursion of drug trafficking, the wave of violence and insecurity, and the fragility of the Country’s national security. During his presidency, Pastrana dealt with the task of regaining control of a country in danger of being overrun by political insurgent groups, such as the FARC, and the increasing production of cocaine.
Pastrana shared his experience of collaborating with the United States Government to launch and implement Plan Colombia in 2000, a military and diplomatic initiative that focused on combating insurgent groups and the widespread problem of drug trafficking in Colombia. Pastrana initiated Plan Colombia alongside, former U.S. President, Bill Clinton and secured millions of dollars in aid from international organizations to invest in counter-narcotics and improve the social welfare of Colombia. Pastrana’s efforts ultimately resulted in a significant decrease in drug related kidnappings and murders from 2002 to 2009.
After the meeting, Gutiérrez stated that “the Colombian experience should serve as an example to be emulated in Guatemala, a country currently facing similar challenges to those faced by Colombia three decades ago. The parallels between the two countries are worth noting in identifying solutions to protect democracy and maintain social order.”

Over 50? You Need This Vaccine to Protect Your Vision
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 5, 2018 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Shingles is no longer just an older person’s disease. Nearly one out of every three people in the United States will develop shingles (herpes zoster), with the greatest number of cases occurring in people in their 50s. Some will suffer an extremely painful and disfiguring complication called herpes zoster ophthalmicus that can cause blindness. Even though an effective vaccine is available, many continue to go unvaccinated. The American Academy of Ophthalmology now recommends that people age 50 and older get the shingles vaccine – 10 years younger than a previous recommendation.

Early symptoms are pain, itching, and tingling of the skin. Redness and numbness lead to a rash. Blisters break open and form scabs. Though the blisters and scabs can last a few weeks, the pain can last much longer, especially in older patients age 65 years and above. While the pain usually resolves in a few weeks or months, it can be severe and debilitating. For some patients, the pain lasts many years, interfering with daily life.
If the virus infects the nerves of the eye, it can lead to:
- Rash on your eyelids;
- Eye infections;
- Pink eye;
- Infection and inflammation of the cornea (front of the eye);
- Dry eye;
- Blurry vision and sensitivity to bright light;
- Pain and swelling inside the eye;
- Swelling of the optic nerve behind your eye; and
- Breakdown of the cornea so severe it requires a corneal transplant.
“Just do it. That’s what I tell my patients,” said Dianna L. Seldomridge, M.D., clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “The vaccine is safe and effective. The health consequences of going unvaccinated are significant, as are the economic costs. The medical costs from treating shingles and it complications are estimated to be $1 billion.”
The herpes zoster virus is the same virus that causes chicken pox. More than 95 percent of people born in the United States who are older than 40 have had chicken pox. The virus lingers in the body and can be reactivated as shingles many years later. This can be due to your body’s natural aging process. Or it can be due to anything that weakens your immune system.
It is unclear why the risk has increased by almost 70 percent in the past 15 years. But it is clear that shingles is no longer just an older person’s disease. Research shows that the risk goes up after age 40 and rises sharply at age 50.
Unfortunately, only 33.4 percent of eligible people age 60 and older are vaccinated, and approximately 5 percent of people age 50 to 59, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
The CDC recommends that healthy adults 50 years and older get two doses of the shingles vaccine called Shingrix, between two to six months apart. A doctor or pharmacist can give Shingrix as a shot in the upper arm. The CDC also recommends Shingrix even if you’ve had shingles in the past, are unsure if you have had chickenpox, or if you received an older shingles vaccine called Zostavax. There is no maximum age for getting Shingrix.
