Fireworks Safety Poster

WASHINGTON, June 29, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — According to a new CPSC report of fireworks incidents in 2016, 11,100 consumers were injured and treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms and four died as a result of direct impact from fireworks.

Children younger than 5 had the second highest rate of injury behind young adults ages 20 to 24.  Injuries associated with consumer fireworks were most often burns to the hands, face and head. Many of the fireworks injuries were a result of misuse or malfunction of fireworks.

What is considered misuse?

  • Mischief
  • Lighting fireworks inside a body part or in hand

What is a malfunction?

  • Fireworks straying off course
  • Short fuses
  • Blowouts and fragment pieces
  • Tip-over incidents

The four fireworks-related deaths were associated with illegal or professional devices. Three of the four deaths involved reloadable aerial devices, and the fourth involved illegal home manufacturing.

What are the 3 Steps to a Safer Celebration?

  1. Never allow children to handle a firework device.
  2. Check local laws and only use legal, consumer-grade fireworks.
  3. Leave professional fireworks to the professionals.

Illinois Latino Caucus Members, Labor Leaders Urge Action To Save Agribusiness, Protect Jobs

0

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois, June 28, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Rep. Elizabeth Hernandez and members of the Latino Caucus and organized labor came together at the Capitol on Wednesday in support of a bipartisan effort authorizing table games at racetracks to salvage Illinois’ agribusiness economy, save 30,000 jobs and preserve the livelihood of thousands of Latino workers.

Hernandez (24th District) filed an amendment to Senate Bill 7, the proposed gaming bill, that authorizes table games at racetracks. The bill, which passed the Illinois Senate last month, authorizes six new casinos with table games – adding even more gaming competition to the State and cheating Illinois’ racetracks and agribusiness industry of the same opportunity to compete. The same bill excludes the State’s three racetracks and denies Latino workers the opportunity for jobs that are going to new casinos across the state.

“We just want an equitable solution,” Hernandez said. “The passage of any gaming legislation that does not include table games at racetracks would doom the horseracing industry, cost up to 30,000 workers their jobs, and once again disproportionately impact Latino workers in my district and across the State.”

“This is a good jobs bill,” said Tim Drea, treasurer of the Illinois AFL-CIO. “The AFL-CIO and all our affiliates are very strongly supportive of the Latino Caucus and this legislation.”

Hernandez (24th District) was joined by Rep. Silvana Tabares (21st District) as well as representatives from the Illinois AFL-CIO, Unite HERE Local 450, Operating Engineers #399 and Teamsters Joint Council 25.

The amendment is supported by 14 members of the Latino Caucus who submitted a letter to leadership Wednesday urging the inclusion of table games for racetracks in legislation expanding gaming in Illinois.

Horseracing is part of a multi-billion dollar agribusiness industry in Illinois. Horse trainers and breeders are fleeing the state in search of higher purses, and four of the State’s seven racetracks have been shuttered in the past 25 years, costing thousands of workers their jobs.

The proliferation of 28,000 slot and video gaming consoles across the state and competition from new casinos has dramatically changed the gaming landscape over the past few years. Slot machines alone are no longer enough to save the State’s beleaguered agribusiness economy.

“The vast majority of the workforce at Illinois racetracks is Latino,” Rep. Jaime Andrade said. “As representatives of predominantly Latino districts, we are specifically invested in the quality and availability of employment opportunities. The tracks provide good, union jobs with fair wages and an opportunity for advancement.”

The addition of table games at racetracks would add an additional 1,000 jobs on top of what slot machines alone could offer. They’d also add tens of millions of dollars to Illinois coffers, more than doubling what slots alone could achieve.

The proposed gaming expansion in SB7 is a live-or-die issue for the agribusiness economy.

“It’s time to level the playing field,” Hernandez said. “We’re fighting for the right and fair solution. Why are we writing laws that favor one sector of the gaming industry over another? Let’s keep jobs here in Illinois agribusiness, not outsource them to the casinos. The Latino Caucus urges leadership to reject any gaming expansion that does not authorize table games at racetracks.”

Will Your Sunglasses Protect You From Serious Eye Disease?

0
AAO Logo

SAN FRANCISCO, June 28, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — With summer in full swing, the days are longer, the sun hotter, and the threat from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays, greater. Excess sun exposure can put you at risk of serious short-term and long-term eye problems. This is true for young and old, year-round. Prevention is simple. Wear sunglasses that block ultraviolet radiation. But how do you know if your sunglasses are up to the task of protecting your family’s sight?

Photo – http://mma.prnewswire.com/media/529116/AAO_sunglasses_protection.jpg

To bring attention to this important eye health matter, ophthalmologists — physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care — are sharing information on how to keep eyes safe from sun damage.

When shopping for sunglasses, look for a tag or label that says 100% protection against both UVA and UVB or 100% protection against UV 400. UV protection is the essential piece you need to look for in a pair of sunglasses. Darkness and color do not indicate the strength of UV protection, and neither does the price tag. Even the least expensive sunglasses can offer adequate protection.

If you doubt your sunglasses have the UV protection claimed by a retail tag, take them to an optical shop. Any shop that has a UV light meter can test your sunglasses. A UV light meter is a handy test for when you doubt your sunglasses have the UV protection claimed by a retail tag or if they are simply old and you want to make sure.

There is no doubt about the consequences of not protecting your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. If eyes are exposed to strong sunlight for too long without proper protection, UV rays can burn the cornea and cause temporary blindness in a matter of hours.

Long-term sun exposure is linked to more serious eye disease, such as cataracts, eye cancer and growths on or near the eye. A lifetime of exposure also likely increases progression of age-related macular degeneration, a condition that can cause blindness.

“It’s so important for children to wear UV-blocking sunglasses early in life. It’s the cumulative damage that occurs over time that puts you at risk of developing sight-robbing eye disease,” said Jeff Pettey, M.D., a clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “And it’s never too late to pick up the habit. Start protecting your eyes today.”

In addition to shades, consider wearing a hat with broad brim. They have been shown to significantly cut exposure to harmful rays. Also, don’t forget the sunscreen!

Taking Fit’s top-of-segment premium driving feel one-step further, ride comfort and handling characteristics have been improved for 2018 thanks to retuned suspension dampers, a more rigid steering system and additional body reinforcements. In addition to comfort and dynamic improvements, Fit offers a quieter cabin rivaling the best in its class, with adjustments made to transmission and steering system mounting hardware, combined with the addition of acoustic glass windshield and improved insulation throughout the vehicle.

The Fit’s rigid body structure is paired with a sophisticated chassis to deliver sporty handling with a steering linearity that gives the driver a sense of oneness with the vehicle unmatched in the subcompact segment.

Fuel Economy
The 2018 Fit retains its outstanding EPA fuel-economy rating2 of 29/36/31 (city/highway/combined) for the manual transmission models, 33/40/36 for the LX trim with CVT and 31/36/33 for the EX, EX-L and Sport trim with CVT. The 6MT optimizes close individual ratios to aid performance while offering a wide overall range to improve fuel efficiency. The CVT enhances engine responsiveness, providing quick and smooth acceleration while improving fuel efficiency with a wide ratio range and low internal friction.

Packaging
Inside the 2018 Honda Fit continues to wow with a rear hatch providing access to a remarkably spacious and accommodating cargo area. With a low load floor, four dedicated seat modes and dozens of configurations, the Fit is the epitome of functionality and utility. Fold the 2nd-row Magic Seat® forward and the Fit provides an enormous 52.7 cubic feet of cargo space—more than any of its key hatchback competitors. Other configurations accommodate long and tall items, or allow two people to relax with their feet up when the Fit is parked.

The 2018 Fit offers exceptional utility via its 60/40 (right/left), split 2nd-row Magic Seat, enabling multiple-configurable seating and cargo-carrying options. In the standard seatback-up/seat bottom-down position, there is ample room for three passengers to sit comfortably. As the seatback is split 60/40, one or two passengers can still be accommodated while extending the cargo-carrying capacity by folding down one side or the other. And since the Fit’s rear seat offers exceptional legroom, the rear passenger area can also accommodate a good-sized pet kennel or crate. The Magic Seat can easily be folded into any of its positions with levers accessible from the rear of the car or the rear doors.

Race Forward and Center for Social Inclusion Uniting As One Organization

0

NEW YORK, June 28, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Two leading national racial justice nonprofit organizations, Race Forward: The Center for Racial Justice Innovation and Center for Social Inclusion (CSI), today announced that the two organizations are uniting under the name Race Forward. Glenn Harris, current president of CSI, will serve as president of the new organization.

Logo – https://mma.prnewswire.com/media/528908/Race_Forward_Logo.jpg

The decision to combine efforts and integrate the two organizations was borne out of opportunity, abundance, urgency, and a mutual desire for greater alignment and multiplied efforts to deliver on both organizations’ core principles of advancing racial equity and supporting communities most impacted by structural racism.

“Given the urgency of the political moment – a vibrant movement for racial justice across the country, and growing pushback against this movement – we could not pass up the opportunity to explore how coming together will help us rise to this moment,” said Sen, who will be transitioning to the role of Race Forward Senior Advisor after serving 11 years as President and Executive Director.

Both Race Forward and CSI have a long history of significant work on the front lines of the racial justice movement, bringing systemic analysis to complex race issues and helping people take effective action toward systemic racial equity in government, organizing, philanthropy, journalism, and other fields. As the United States stands at the brink of the greatest rollback of civil rights in decades, Sen and Harris recognized a unique opportunity to increase support for communities of color facing a period of heightened persecution and anxiety, while deepening a mutual commitment to build an inclusive democracy.

“Uniting as one organization is about combining our experiences, skills, and talents to address the multiple crises that communities of color face in this country,” said Harris. “Our work remains the same: to transform institutions and to partner with communities to use policy, culture, and narrative to center racial equity.”

Center for Social Inclusion catalyzes communities, government, and other institutions to dismantle structural racial inequity and create equitable outcomes for all. Race Forward advances racial justice through research, media, and practice. Race Forward publishes the award-winning daily news site Colorlines, which will continue to operate under the helm of Harris, and presents the biennial Facing Race National Conference.

Expanded work for the new Race Forward will incorporate CSI’s existing strategy to advance racial equity and will be organized into five functions: transforming institutions; narrative shift; movement and capacity building; policy development; and research.

In the coming months, the two organizations will undergo a strategic integration process, while existing programmatic work will continue in their current forms. Both teams are eager to identify new and innovative ways to continue their institutional work while deepening the new Race Forward’s commitment to partnering with communities to advance equity and foster the next generation of racial justice leaders.

For more information or media inquiries, please contact Xakota Espinoza at [email protected] or 917-633-7932.

Race Forward advances racial justice through research, media and practice. Founded in 2002, Center for Social Inclusion catalyzes community, government, and other institutions to dismantle structural racial inequity and create equitable outcomes for all. Labor Commissioner’s Decision Results in $48,860 for Convenience Store Clerk Making Less Than Minimum Wage and No Overtime Pay

0

YUBA CITY, California, June 27, 2017 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Labor Commissioner’s Office announced that a Northern California convenience store owner paid a clerk $48,860 in back wages after the wage claim hearing officer ruled that the worker was not making minimum wage and was not paid overtime or double-time.

The clerk for Mike’s Food & Liquor, located in Olivehurst, filed a wage claim on March 17, 2015. His initial claim was for $14,520 in underpaid regular wages from January 1, 2013 to October 31, 2014. The claimant filed his claim without an attorney or other advocate representing him. The Labor Commissioner’s wage claim hearing officer found that the worker was underpaid much more than he originally claimed, determining the clerk was owed $42,980, consisting of $22,162 in regular and overtime wages, $14,707 in liquidated damages, $3,586 in interest and $2,524 in waiting time penalties.

“Workers that are not paid correctly are victims of wage theft and my office can help them get back what they have earned,” said Labor Commissioner Julie A. Su. “This case shows that when workers exercise their labor rights and come forward to report wage theft, they can do so on their own without an attorney, they can receive the wages they are owed, and in some cases even more.”

The clerk worked on average 62.2 hours per week, earning an average of 20.2 overtime hours and two double-time hours for working more than eight hours on the seventh consecutive day of the workweek. Regardless of the number of hours actually worked the employer paid the clerk for 80 hours every semi-monthly pay period, which resulted in an underpayment of regular wages because most months exceed four weeks.

The Labor Commissioner’s Office entered a judgment after the employer failed to pay the award and successfully recovered $48,860, the balance of the award plus post-judgment interest.

Most workers in California, unless exempt from overtime laws, must receive overtime pay of 1.5 times the regular rate of pay for all hours worked over 8 hours in a workday or over 40 hours in a week, and double the regular rate of pay for all hours worked over 12 hours in a workday. Workers paid less than minimum wage are entitled to receive liquidated damages, which equal the amount of underpaid wages plus interest. Waiting time penalties are imposed when the employer fails to provide workers their final paycheck upon separation.

The Labor Commissioner’s Office, officially known as the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement, is a division of the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR). Among its wide-ranging enforcement responsibilities, the Labor Commissioner’s Office inspects workplaces for wage and hour violations, adjudicates wage claims, investigates retaliation complaints and educates the public on labor laws.

In 2014, Commissioner Su launched the Wage Theft is a Crime multilingual public awareness campaign. The campaign defines wage theft and informs workers of their rights and the resources available to them to recover unpaid wages or report other labor law violations. Employees with work-related questions or complaints may contact DIR’s Call Center in English or Spanish at 844-LABOR-DIR (844-522-6734).

Members of the press may contact Peter Melton or Frank Polizzi at (510) 286-1161, and are encouraged to subscribe to get email alerts on DIR’s press releases or other departmental updates.

The California Department of Industrial Relations, established in 1927, protects and improves the health, safety, and economic well-being of over 18 million wage earners, and helps their employers comply with state labor laws. DIR is housed within the Labor & Workforce Development Agency. For general inquiries, contact DIR’s Communications Call Center at 844-LABOR-DIR (844-522-6734) for help in locating the appropriate division or program in our department.
