An Appetite for Green Cards Drives EB-5 Investors to Chef-Driven Restaurants in Florida

0

MIAMI, Sept. 19, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Chef-driven restaurants in Florida are increasingly turning to foreign capital to fund the expansion of their concepts.

Chefs and restaurant operators are tapping foreign investors to invest $500,000 in exchange for U.S. residency under the EB-5 Investor Visa Program. Restaurants are highly popular with EB-5 investors because they create a significant number of jobs, the main requirement to obtain residency for the investors and their families, said Roger A. Bernstein, co-owner of American Life Investment LLC regional center. Mr. Bernstein is rebranding ALI as “EB-5 for Florida Regional Center” to expand its focus to include chef-driven restaurants and small- to mid-size projects across Florida. EB-5 for Florida Regional Center is currently raising capital for two successful and popular restaurant brands in South Florida: Tap 42 (http://www.tap42eb5.com/) and Meat Market Steakhouse (https://meatmarketeb5.com/)

For information on EB-5 for Florida Regional Center visit https://eb5forflorida.com or contact +1 (305) 455-3217

“There are many investors who prefer smaller projects that can be completed relatively fast,” said Bernstein, who is a veteran immigration attorney in Miami.  “Also, it is easier for them to understand how a chef-driven concept will create jobs, pay them interest on their loan, pay them back their investment and get their family the green card.”

Latin American investors are increasingly applying for EB-5 visas and investing in restaurants ran by experience operators as a means to obtain their green card. Since 2008, the number of EB-5 investors from Venezuela has jumped 93.6 %, from Mexico 85.5 % and from Brazil 82.3 %.

Miami Beach-based Meat Market is an example of a chef-driven concept that has attracted those investors to help fund the opening of its Palm Beach restaurant in 2014.

“In less than two years, investors are on their way to obtaining conditional residency, more than sufficient jobs have already been created and the investors are on track to have their capital returned by year five,” said David Tornek, co-owner of Meat Market now expanding across Florida.

EB-5 for Florida Regional Center is raising up to $10 million to bring Meat Market to Tampa, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale and downtown Miami. The regional center is also raising $10 million to bring Tap 42 to Midtown Miami, West Palm Beach, Miami Beach, and Aventura.

Olsbergs MSE, Honda Capture First Red Bull GRC Double-Podium Result

Honda Olsbergs MSE drivers Sebastian Eriksson and Joni Wiman captured a double-podium finish in Red Bull Global Rallycross competition on Saturday at Evergreen Speedway.

SEATTLE, Sept. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — For the first time in the manufacturer’s history, Honda Olsbergs MSE drivers Sebastian Eriksson and Joni Wiman captured a double-podium finish in Red Bull Global Rallycross competition on Saturday at Evergreen Speedway. With the result, Honda has now tallied five podium finishes in its inaugural season in Red Bull GRC.

Honda Olsbergs MSE drivers Sebastian Eriksson and Joni Wiman captured a double-podium finish in Red Bull Global Rallycross competition on Saturday at Evergreen Speedway.

After enduring the rain and mud-soaked conditions, Eriksson piloted his No. 93 Honda Red Bull OMSE Civic Coupe to a second-place finish, while his teammate, Wiman, finished third. Both drivers displayed superb car control through the difficult circumstances. Eriksson’s inside starting position on the middle of the front row and Wiman’s, on the inside of the third row, proved to be the edge the team needed to secure the second and third positions through the hole shot.

The Honda Civic Coupe’s turbocharged power plant enabled an aggressive start off the line, with Eriksson running side-by-side with Tanner Foust and Wiman navigating past four competitors going into the first corner. The aggressive start led to precision and consistency across the soaked .791-mile circuit and particularly through the muddy, 22.5 percent dirt section.

The Honda Racing teammates both took their Joker Laps on the third lap, enabling them to open an early gap on the rest of the field. Eriksson and Wiman’s 8,500 rpm Honda Civic engines paced the rest of the Red Bull GRC field by more than 1.137 seconds.

The Olsbergs MSE and Honda-powered team displayed toughness, speed and consistency all weekend long. Eriksson won the Semifinal A heat and led the Saturday morning warm-up. Wiman’s difficult fourth-place finish in Semifinal B led to his front-row starting position in the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ). Ultimately, Wiman’s poise and perseverance led him to victory in the LCQ and the inside starting position going into the final.

With Saturday’s result, Honda remains in third place in the season-long manufacturers’ championship. The Honda Racing team now heads to the final event on the 2016 Red Bull GRC calendar, a home race at the Port of Los Angeles. Coverage of the doubleheader Red Bull GRC LA Presented by Honda, begins on Sunday, October 9 at 3 p.m. ET on NBC. Online coverage begins at 3:30 p.m. on RedBull.TV.

Sebastian Eriksson (No. 93 Honda Red Bull OMSE Civic): “We had such a great weekend here in Seattle. Our team fought hard all weekend long and to come away with a double podium is truly special for the entire team. We gave everything we had today and knew that the conditions were not on our side, but we persevered, and to be on the podium with Joni [Wiman] is even more special. I’m looking forward to competing in Honda’s home race in Los Angeles.”

Joni Wiman (No. 31 Honda Red Bull OMSE Civic): “Man, this was a long time coming. We have finished fourth and fifth so many times this season that coming away with the podium finish feels like a big weight off my shoulders. The team deserves so much and lately luck has not been on our side. Now, we’ve just got to do it all again in Los Angeles.”

Andreas Eriksson, CEO/ Team Principal, Olsbergs MSE: “To see both cars up at the front is really great. We’ve proven that we have the pace and it’s hard to put it all together in half a year. Everything is different; there are so many different areas to find improvements. We continue to improve and get faster and faster, but when we’re competing in Red Bull Global Rallycross with Honda engines and sponsors like Red Bull and Bluebeam, winning is something we strive for and we won’t be satisfied until we do.”

Mortgage Pilot with Freddie Mac Expands Options for Diverse Communities

TUSTIN, California, Sept. 19, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — New American Funding and Alterra Home Loans, two national mortgage banks, announce the launch of Your Path, a new loan program that makes affordable homeownership opportunities available by considering the changing demographics of U.S. borrowers. Utilizing Freddie Mac’s low down payment Home Possible mortgages as its foundation, this pilot program features greater flexibility for qualifying borrowers.

“We have a passion for making sure everyone has an equal opportunity to achieve the American dream, and we’re excited to work with Freddie Mac to create a greater pathway to homeownership for more people,” said Patty Arvielo, President of New American Funding.

“By collaborating, we can put what matters most first, offering more options to a more diverse set of consumers, and helping them build wealth through homeownership. We are excited to collaborate with Freddie Mac and New American Funding on this effort,” commented Jason Madiedo, CEO of Alterra Home Loans.

Your Path puts affordable homeownership within reach for more borrowers by taking into consideration a wider range of factors than traditional underwriting methods, including the needs of self-employed borrowers, seasonal employees, and multi-generational households.

“As we look to support responsible lending, provide sustainable homeownership, and improve access to credit for American families, we recognize that borrower demographics are changing and that traditional underwriting methods don’t account for some of today’s borrower characteristics,” said Danny Gardner, Freddie Mac’s Vice President of Affordable Lending and Access to Credit. “We conducted this pilot to evaluate underwriting features that account for borrower preferences, household formation trends, and other financial considerations as part of our commitment to building a better Freddie Mac and a better housing finance system.”

An official announcement will take place during the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP) National Convention, which happens in Los Angeles, CA, from September 19 – 20, 2016.

Chicago United Report Reveals Minorities’ Career Earnings Trail Those of Caucasian Males By 30-45 Percent

2016 Inside Inclusion Report Also Shows Minorities Continue to be Underrepresented in Leadership Positions at Chicago’s Top 50 Companies

CHICAGO, Sept. 19, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Chicago United unveiled the findings of its biennial report, Inside Inclusion Featuring the Corporate Diversity Profile, which examines trends in the racial composition of board of directors and senior leadership positions in the top 50 Chicago-headquartered companies. The report revealed minimal gains in minority representation throughout executive ranks and examined its significant impact of earning power over minority groups’ lifetimes.

In addition to leadership diversity trends, this year Chicago United partnered with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago to calculate earnings trajectories over a 40-year career of different races/ethnicities, genders and education levels using data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The results found that, compared to white males, most minorities experience significantly reduced lifetime earnings regardless of their level of educational achievement.

For example, minorities with professional degrees earn less than white males with similar levels of education:

  • Over a lifetime, African American men will earn 74 percent of their white male counterparts’ earnings.
  • Caucasian females will earn 68 percent and African American females will earn 67 percent of what white males earn.
  • Latino males will earn 71 percent and Latinas will earn only 55 percent of their white male counterparts’ lifetime earnings.
  • Asian females fare slightly better, earning 80 percent of white males’ lifetime earnings.
  • Asian males were the one exception to the trend, earning 6 percent more than white males over a lifetime.

“The fact that the majority of diverse professionals are subject to lesser lifetime earnings than their Caucasian counterparts, regardless of an equivalent education level, has corresponding negative impact on the ability to purchase homes, accumulate savings, pay for their children’s education and build generational wealth. These findings reveal that inclusion is a necessary strategy in addressing disparities which are obviously not linked to educational differences,” said Gloria Castillo, president and CEO of Chicago United. “It is clear that intentional action is needed now, more than ever, to implement leading inclusive business practices.”

An analysis of the larger trends in racial diversity across Chicago’s top 50 companies (based on revenue) shows incremental movement across three core areas, including boards of directors, C-suites and executive ranks:

  • Minority representation on boards of directors increased from 12 percent to 14 percent between 2014 and 2016 with African Americans maintaining the largest percentage of representation at 8 percent.
  • Minority representation in the C-suite grew by 1 percent between 2012 and 2014 from 7 percent to 8 percent and remained stagnant (8 percent) in 2016. African Americans, Asians and Hispanics are separated by no more than a couple of percentage points, showing representation levels of 4 percent, 3 percent and 2 percent, respectively.
  • 19 out of 50 (38 percent) of Chicago companies have no ethnic diversity within their executive ranks and minority representation slipped between 2016 and 2014, decreasing from 10 percent to 9 percent.

“The people serving on board of directors and in the C-suite make decisions about where corporate investments are made. These critical decisions have a very direct impact on economic opportunity and who benefits in wealth creation,” added Castillo. “In order to achieve equal representation in these leadership positions, I challenge our local leaders to consider what purposeful changes they can make to strengthen diversity within their organizations and positively impact the communities of Chicago.”

To provide organizations with a roadmap to improve in areas critical to diversity and inclusion (D&I) advancement, Chicago United convened a team of leading diversity and human resources professionals to identify the most relevant challenges and best practices of Chicago’s corporations. This taskforce, chaired by Warren M. Smith, America’s career management leader at Ernst & Young LLP, together discovered insights that informed a Toolkit included within Inside Inclusion that offers insights into leading D&I practices and provides questions to keep leaders and stakeholders engaged in an ongoing dialogue around diversity and inclusion.

“The Toolkit provides an introspective review into an organization’s talent agenda and how organizations can continue to advance their efforts,” said Smith. “It provides a scalable framework that can be applied at the corporate or business-unit level—and that’s what makes it so powerful.”

About Inside Inclusion

Inside Inclusion examined the top 50 Chicago-based public companies ranked by 2015 revenues as reported in the Crain’s Chicago Business Book of Lists, December 2015. The number of incumbents and ethnicity was determined by reviewing company proxy statements.

Additionally, in collaboration with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, an analysis was conducted by Maude Toussaint-Comeau, senior business economist in the community development and policy studies division of the economic research department, to help illustrate the earnings prospects of workers across stages of their career. The calculations are based on American Community Survey (ACS) 2010-2014 five-year estimates.
