Zika Virus May Be Linked to More Eye Problems in Brazilian Babies with Microcephaly

This infant has microcephaly presumed to be caused by the Zika virus. Researchers from Brazil and Stanford University recently found additional eye abnormalities in babies with Zika-induced microcephaly, according to a new study being published online May 25, 2016 in the journal Ophthalmology, journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

SAN FRANCISCO, May 25, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Researchers studying babies with a Zika virus-related birth defect say they have found previously unreported eye problems possibly linked to the virus that could result in severe visual impairment. In three Brazilian infants with microcephaly, the researchers observed retinal lesions, hemorrhaging and abnormal blood vessel development not noted before in relation to the virus. The findings are being published online today in Ophthalmology, journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Zika virus is now known to cause microcephaly, a birth defect marked by smaller head and brain size.1 In Brazil, the site of the most serious outbreak, nearly 1.5 million people reportedly have the virus. Some 4,000 infants were recently born with microcephaly, according to reports.2 As a result, the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency in February, bringing added urgency to the need for more research. A prior study of 29 Brazilian babies with presumed congenital Zika infection showed that a third had eye problems. These included ocular lesions, optic nerve abnormalities and chorioretinal atrophy, a withering of the retina and choroid, the latter of which provides oxygen and nutrients to the retina.3

For this case study, ophthalmology researchers from Brazil and Stanford University examined the eyes of three infant boys from Northern Brazil born in late 2015 with microcephaly. All had mothers with suspected Zika virus infections during the first trimester of pregnancy. Among the findings, the researchers identified several types of ocular issues not previously observed in relation to Zika virus, some of which could cause visual impairment if untreated. These included:

  • Hemorrhagic retinopathy, or bleeding in the retina, the light-sensitive layer of cells lining the back of the eye;
  • Abnormal vasculature in the retina, including signs of missing blood vessels in the retina where the cells may have died; and
  • Torpedo maculopathy, identified by torpedo-shaped lesions in the macula, the central portion of the retina. While retinal lesions have been observed in prior papers on Zika-related ocular findings, the authors note that this type of lesion has not been observed in cases of microcephaly.

In addition to these observations, the infants in this study also exhibited other ocular symptoms noted in the previous study. Specifically, all three babies in this case study showed signs of pigmentary maculopathy, lesions that appear as speckles of pigment on the macula. Four eyes had symptoms of chorioretinal atrophy marked by a darkly pigmented ring.

The study is small with limited observational data. However, the findings add to a growing body of clinical information about how the Zika virus may affect children’s eye development and vision. The authors noted that it remains unclear whether the viral infection itself causes eye abnormalities or if they are a consequence of Zika-induced microcephaly.

“To my knowledge, the eye problems we found have not been associated with Zika virus before,” said Darius Moshfeghi, M.D., senior author and a professor of ophthalmology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. “The next step is to differentiate what findings are related to the Zika virus itself versus microcephaly caused by the virus in order to better understand which infants will need screening.”

For now, the authors are calling for all babies with microcephaly in areas hit by Zika to be examined by an ophthalmologist. This is consistent with recent screening recommendations made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.4

“Until further notice, health professionals in regions endemic for Zika infection are advised to submit all newborns with microcephaly to retinal examinations,” the authors wrote. “The procedure can contribute significantly to our understanding of the infection.”

Fireworks Eye Injuries Have More Than Doubled in Recent Years

Fireworks injuries have more than doubled in recent years. The American Academy Ophthalmology shares the blinding truth about fireworks, to remind the public that consumer fireworks are never safe.

SAN FRANCISCO, May 24, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Fireworks sales will start blazing across the country starting Memorial Day weekend, running through the Fourth of July. As retailers begin their promotions, the American Academy of Ophthalmology is shining a light on this explosive fact: the number of eye injuries caused by fireworks has more than doubled in recent years.

Fireworks injuries cause approximately 10,000 visits to the emergency each year, according to data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.[1] Injuries largely occurred in the weeks before and after the Fourth of July. The CPSC’s most recent fireworks report showed that about 1,300 eye injuries related to fireworks were treated in U.S. emergency rooms in 2014, up from 600 reported in 2011. This is why some ophthalmologists – physicians that specialize in medical and surgical care – have to keep operating rooms on call to treat these injuries each year.

To help prevent these injuries, the Academy is debunking four myths about consumer fireworks risks:

  1. Small doesn’t equal safe. A common culprit of fireworks injuries is the kind often handed to small children – the classic sparkler. Many people mistakenly believe sparklers are harmless due to their size. However, they can reach temperatures of up to 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt certain metals. Even those tiny poppers or snappers can pose dangers. A ricocheting popper burned parts of Nolan Haney‘s eye and eyelid when he was 4 years old.
  2. Even though it looks like a dud, it may not act like one. At age 16, Jameson Lamb was hit square in the eye with a Roman candle that he thought had been extinguished. Now 20, Lamb has gone through multiple surgeries including a corneal transplant and a stem cell transplant.
  3. Just because you’re not lighting or throwing it doesn’t mean you’re out of the firing line. An international study of fireworks-related eye injuries showed that half of those hurt were bystanders. The researchers also found that one in six of these injuries caused severe vision loss.[2]
  4. The Fourth can be complete without using consumer fireworks. The Academy advises that the safest way to view fireworks is to watch a professional show.

“Playing with consumer fireworks around these holidays have become such a beloved tradition that it is easy to forget the dangers they can pose, particularly to the eyes,” said Philip R. Rizzuto, M.D., ophthalmologist and clinical spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “We hope people will take the safest route to celebrating their independence by leaving fireworks to the professionals this year.”

If you experience a fireworks eye injury:

  • Seek medical attention immediately.
  • Avoid rubbing or rinsing the eyes or applying pressure.
  • Do not remove any object from the eye, apply ointments, or take any pain. medications before seeking medical help.

To help highlight the potential dangers of fireworks to children, the Academy has created an animated public service announcement titled “Fireworks: The Blinding Truth.” It encourages the public and media to view and share the PSA. Visit the Academy’s EyeSmart® website for more information about fireworks eye safety.

MARYSVILLE, Ohio, May 24, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Acura today celebrated the highly anticipated line-off of the first serial production 2017 Acura NSX at the new Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio. The PMC is the exclusive manufacturing home to Acura’s next-generation NSX, the only supercar made in America.

From left, Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports and Hendrick Automotive Group, takes delivery of 2017 Acura NSX, VIN 001, from Acura NSX Engineering Large Project Leader Clement D'Souza.

“Today marks the realization of a big dream here at the PMC and the culmination of more than 30 years of manufacturing experience and expertise here in Ohio,” said Clement D’Souza, engineering large project leader for the Acura NSX. “Our world class team of expert technicians, through their passion, has realized major innovations in the design and manufacturing of a next-generation Acura supercar that truly delivers incredible precision crafted performance.”

The first customer, Rick Hendrick, earned the right to custom order the first production NSX with a winning bid of $1.2 million at the Barrett-Jackson auction in January. All proceeds from the sale went to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and Camp Southern Ground.  Hendrick drove his Valencia Red Pearl Acura NSX off the line. VIN 001 features exclusive interwoven wheels, carbon ceramic brake rotors, leather and Alcantara interior trim and carbon fiber upgrades including the engine cover, roof, and rear decklid spoiler.

“The NSX is a pure expression of the Precision Crafted Performance DNA and challenging spirit that defines the Acura brand,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of Acura. “We can’t wait to give our clients a chance to experience this dream product, and will carry this day’s momentum forward as we continue to invest in and grow Acura.”

“Taking delivery of this first new Acura supercar and knowing the proceeds will benefit two remarkable organizations for children makes this a very special moment for me and everyone on our team,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports and chairman of Hendrick Automotive Group. “It’s especially rewarding to see this incredible supercar coming to life in the United States, which is a real testament to the company’s commitment to innovation and manufacturing here.”

The PMC was designed to blend human craftsmanship and advanced technologies to assure superior build quality and precision crafted performance. The PMC is home to master technicians who developed 12 patent-pending technologies and other advanced methods of producing a made-to-order supercar. PMC associates created sophisticated new manufacturing methods around the unique capabilities and specifications of Acura’s next-generation NSX. Innovations to the NSX construction, painting, assembly and quality confirmation process include fully robotic MIG welding of the aluminum-intensive space frame, 14 hours of meticulous hand assembly by 16 highly skilled manufacturing technicians, and a dynamic performance testing and confirmation process drawn from the company’s extensive race experience.

In nearby Anna, Ohio, at the company’s largest engine plant, master builders hand assemble the NSX’s 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine, which is then mated to its advanced 9-speed dual clutch transmission and rear direct drive electric motor.  Each NSX engine is machine balanced, bench tested and broken-in to the equivalent of 150 miles of service to ensure that every NSX engine is track-ready upon customer delivery.  The engine is installed at the PMC, along with its revolutionary front-mounted Twin Motor Unit, which enables electrically powered torque vectoring, a world’s first capability in the sports car realm.

Development of the Acura NSX involved a global R&D team led by engineers at the Ohio Center of Honda R&D Americas, Inc. in Raymond, Ohio, roughly a mile from the PMC.  The final design was created at the Acura Design Studio in Torrance, Calif., based on an original concept from the Wako Studio in Japan.

About the Acura NSX
Created to bring a new experience to the supercar segment, the next-generation Acura NSX challenges conventional beliefs about supercars, with cutting-edge and world-first technologies. Much as the first generation NSX did a quarter century ago, the 2017 NSX breaks the mold through a first-of-its-kind Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive power unit, a multimaterial body structure, advanced aerodynamics and a cockpit that supports performance driving on every level without sacrificing comfort. The 2017 Acura NSX is the only supercar designed, developed and manufactured in the U.S. and is produced exclusively at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio using domestic and globally sourced parts. The NSX engine is manufactured at the Anna, Ohio engine plant, also using domestic and globally sourced parts.

Children’s Advocates Release Statewide Poll Results in California State Budget Fight

0

SACRAMENTO, California, May 24, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The California Coalition for Equity in Early Care and Education and Lake Research Partners today released results from a statewide poll of California voters demonstrating wide support for using a portion of California’s estimated $8 billion state budget surplus to increase funding for child development programs.

The coalition is asking Governor Jerry Brown and the leaders of the California Legislature to approve the $ 800 million budget plan of the California Legislative Women’s Caucus.

Presently 236,000 children and their families are being priced out of high quality nonprofit programs; qualified but underpaid teachers and staff are unable to continue working in their chosen field, and estimated waiting lists for working parents top over 300,000.

Please see “Voices for Equity” below, and visit the following links for the statewide polling results:

Voices for Equity in California’s Early Care and Education Programs:

“Voters think we need to do more than we are currently doing to ensure children enter kindergarten with the skills they need to do their best. A six in 10 majority favor increasing state funding to ensure that all children have access to quality programs, including a strong majority who favor even if it increased their taxes.” Celinda Lake, Principal, Lake Research Partners

“The California Legislative Women’s Caucus remains committed to prioritizing a strong investment in early care and education so children can learn and parents can work. An investment in our earliest learners is prudent, keeps Californians working and prevents costly academic interventions and consequences later on.” Senator Hannah Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) Chair, Ca. Legislative Women’s Caucus

“We can stay within the pocketbook, invest more in people, be creative in our investment, and ensure that people are better taken care of so that they can contribute to our society and our tax base. Ultimately, this is about supporting individuals in becoming the best they can be. Our budget does not go far enough to nurture that. I challenge the Governor and my colleagues to do more of what he did with prison rehabilitation, extending that innovative rationale to children in early care and education, and on welfare.” Senator Holly Mitchell

“Governor Brown needs to support the Legislative Women’s Caucus’ call for $800 million to save early childhood education. This is an easy choice and not one penny of taxes needs to be raised. If the Governor of Alabama can find $800 million to build prisons, our great Governor of California can find a way from surplus funds to provide $800 million to invest in our children’s future.” Ca. Congressman George Miller (ret.), past Chair, House Committee on Education and Labor, past Chair House Select Committee on Children, Youth, and Families

“State wide the California Early Care and Education community is united. We need to end the funding drought that has plagued nonprofit providers since the Great Recession.” AssemblyMember Ted Lempert (ret.) President and CEO, Children Now

“Governor Brown and the Legislature need to save early childhood education. Budgeting $800 million to save early childhood education is a moral choice as well as a practical choice. Turning our backs on kids who are brimming with happiness and hope is like saying that ‘Failure is OK, because we really don’t care’. Governor Brown, Senators, and Assembly Members: you all need to care now. Save early childhood education.” Mr. Santiago Ruiz– Co-Chair, Ca. Coalition for Equity in Early Care and Education

California employers understand that investing early in children’s education will pay huge economic and social dividends in the decades to come. Recent studies show that California’s job market will be facing a deficit of over 1 million college graduates by 2030. The time to address that problem is right now and the way to do it is by investing in early education programs.” Mr. Jim Wunderman, CEO, Bay Area Council

“Saving early childhood education programs is the smartest choice an elected official can make. Voters want investments in early childhood education, and they will remember who chose to care about the future of our youngest Californians and who chose to ignore them.” Ms. Liz Burns, Community Action Marin

“I earned a college degree and chose a career in Early Childhood Education and now I’m barely making it in terms of food and shelter. I love my work, it’s my calling. Yet I don’t know how long I can continue doing this most rewarding work. Minds are most eager at the youngest ages. And the thirst for knowledge that children gain through early childhood education easily translates to success in life.” Sally Swift, ECE teacher at a nonprofit agency serving low income families

“It is up to us to defend our children from the shortsightedness of the Sacramento Scrooges. The money that California invests in our children today will be money that won’t have to be spent tomorrow to deal with dropouts, unemployment, or mass incarceration.” Ana Sanchez– ECE working parent with a child enrolled at a nonprofit agency serving low income families

Providing Advanced Molecular and Immunological Detection

ROCKVILLE, Maryland, May 24, 2016 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Tetracore, Inc today announced the deployment of the Cirrus DX™ point of care molecular solution for the detection of Zika virus, along with Dengue virus and Chikungunya virus. In collaboration with the Naval Infectious Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory (NIDDL), Naval Medical Research Center, the Cirrus DX systems are being installed at The St. George’s Medical School on the island of Grenada.

Logo – http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20160524/371337LOGO

The Cirrus DX solution consists of the Tetracore T-COR 8™ instrument and the Collect-to-Test (C2T™) cartridge. The T-COR 8 instrument can run up to eight samples at a time, a built-in battery that can run the instrument up to four hours without direct power, and a unique connectivity capability that allows for access to the instrument from anywhere in the world on a secure network. The C2T cartridge contains all the components necessary to perform a test and does not require precise addition of specimen.

“To date the Cirrus DX solution is used to detect bio-threat agents by first responders and investigators and veterinary testing,” said Dr. Bill Nelson, CEO of Tetracore. “This is the first time the system is being leveraged in a clinical setting, an important milestone for us as we believe the solution provides a leap forward for point of care molecular diagnostic systems.” The testing being deployed also uses a proprietary collection device that will go from a finger stick directly into the C2T cartridge with no other processing. The device can convert whole blood into plasma that is ready for testing.

The first installation starts in Grenada, with plans to include additional islands in the program during the summer, all being supported in real-time from the U.S. and connected to one another.

“Our system will allow the participating Caribbean nations to be able to not just access molecular testing for themselves, but also know the spread of Zika in the region,” said Kyle Armantrout, Director of Human Diagnostics at Tetracore. “The access to real-time data by all the parties involved will give insight to what’s working and where it’s working in terms of control and response.”

About Tetracore, Inc.

Beth Shapiro, Executive Director of Citymeals on Wheels, said, “The influence of the Latino world on New York is undeniable. This rich heritage permeates every aspect of city life including our art, music, literature, film, fashion and, oh yes, the food!  ¡Qué rico! celebrates this wonderful culture as well as the thousands of chefs and restaurateurs who have committed themselves to Citymeals over the years and who help us create a lifeline of meals and companionship for vulnerable older New Yorkers.”

Among the planned menu items are roasted plantain empanadas from Chef Ivy Stark; sweet corn tamalito with lime crème and crispy chorizo from Adrianne Calvo; tentacion de pollo from Carlos Cristóbal Márquez Valdés; and cold avocado soup with crab from Carolina Bazán. The event will also feature signature cocktails from top spirit sponsors and stellar wines from notable wineries.

Nick Valenti, CEO of Patina Restaurant Group, is the evening’s Grand Host.  Official sponsors of Citymeals on Wheels are American Airlines and FIJI Water.
