Five year-old Turns Milk Container into $2,000 Scholarship

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., July 9, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The California Milk Processor Board (CMPB), creator of got milk? and Toma Leche, announced today the grand prize winner of the “Milk and Art Contest.” Five year-old Brooke Payan of Orange County, California won the $2,000 grand prize with a submission featuring a brown milk jug Daschund puppy named Rosemary.

“Brooke was overjoyed when she heard her little milk jug puppy won the contest,” said Vivian Zavala, Brooke’s mother. “This was a really fun project for us to work on together and she surprised me with her focus and creativity. I never imagined that my child would be winning her first college scholarship at the age of five, but I’m truly happy that we’re getting a jumpstart on her future!” she added.

“I want to be an artist and a doctor so I can check people’s hearts and breathing and then paint,” shared Brooke.

The contest was launched on the got milk? and Toma Leche Facebook pages in late March and garnered a multitude of imaginative entries. This bonding activity for moms and kids served as both a creative outlet and reminder of the nutritional importance of milk. Nutrient-rich milk helps fuel daily activities that range from the creative – such as re-imagining a milk jug – to the athletic and academic.

The “Milk and Art Contest” was open to all California mothers with kids between the ages of 3 and 12. Participants were asked to create an original piece of art using a milk container and share a picture of their creation on their social media platforms using the hashtag #MilkAndArtContest for a chance to win a $2,000 grand prize towards their child’s college education. Eight finalist entries were featured on the got milk? and Toma Leche Facebook pages and winners were selected by online voters who were encouraged to “like” their favorite entries. All winners are from Southern California.

  • 1st Place: Vivian Zavala – Orange County
  • 2nd Place: Claudia Sandoval – Los Angeles County
  • 3rd Place: Mary M. Mendoza – Los Angeles County

The 2nd place winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship and 3rd place winner a $500 scholarship.

“Congratulations to all of our winners,” said Steve James, Executive Director of the CMPB. “Initiatives like the ‘Milk and Art Contest’ are creating memorable family moments while reminding us of the important role nutrition plays in ensuring a better future. We wish these children much success today and in their future college years,” he added.

About the CMPB
The California Milk Processor Board was established in 1993 to make milk more competitive and increase milk consumption in California. Awareness of got milk? is over 90% nationally and it is considered one of the most important and successful campaigns in history. Got milk? is a federally registered trademark that has been licensed by the national dairy boards since 1995. The CMPB’s Spanish-language campaign began in 1994 using the tagline “Familia, Amor y Leche” (Family, Love and Milk). The TOMA LECHE (Drink Milk) campaign replaced it in 2006, in order to better align the English and Spanish language work. The CMPB is funded by all California milk processors and administered by the California Department of Food and Agriculture.

Xoom Adds Instant Mobile Reload to Latin America, Improves Convenience

Xoom Mobile Reload allows customers to instantly recharge prepaid mobile phones online from the U.S. to Telcel, Movistar, Claro, Digicel, Nextel, Tigo Phones in Latin America and the Caribbean

SAN FRANCISCO, July 9, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Xoom Corporation (NASDAQ: XOOM), a leading digital money transfer provider, has launched Xoom Mobile Reload. The cutting-edge service allows customers to instantly send airtime credit online from the U.S. to prepaid mobile phones in 16 countries in Latin America, including Mexico, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Peru, Guatemala, El Salvador, and more.

By adding mobile recharge, Xoom expands its offerings, enabling customers to do more for their friends and family with less hassle. Similar to money transfer and bill pay, Xoom customers can skip driving to the store and send a mobile recharge more conveniently through Xoom’s mobile Xoom.com.

“Even though mobile reloads are for small amounts, they go a long way towards helping our families overseas,” said Bobby Aitkenhead, Vice President of Bill Pay and Mobile Reload. “With the new Xoom Mobile Reload, senders have the opportunity to support more loved ones. They can send a traditional money transfer to their mother and send a phone top up to their sister, cousin, nephew, aunt, and friend–all with Xoom.”

“Xoom.com is now a complete solution for customers who support loved ones abroad. Our customers can send money to their loved ones, conveniently pay their family’s bills, and send a reload instantly to their mobile phones,” added Aitkenhead. “Now there’s no need to go to the store to help your family. You can do it from your smartphone, anytime.”

Xoom partnered with TransferTo, a leading provider of international airtime remittance, to enable the transfer of prepaid mobile credits. With just the mobile phone number, Xoom and TransferTo’s cutting-edge technology auto detects the carrier in real-time and instantly sends airtime credit to the receiving phone. More than 90 carriers are supported, and customers can choose to send online at Xoom.com. The moment airtime is credited to the account, a free in-language text message is sent to the receiver. The technology securely auto-saves the transaction information, including the mobile number, payment method, and amount sent, allowing repeat transactions to be sent with just two clicks.

In a recent proprietary survey of Xoom customers that have sent money to Mexico and have used a reload service in the past, 54 percent add airtime credit to their loved one’s mobile phone monthly or more often.

When recharging a mobile phone with Xoom Mobile Reload, senders choose a fixed amount in local currency (roughly equal to $5 to $25 USD), and receive a fair and transparent exchange rate that is equal to Xoom’s money transfer exchange rate, plus a $0.99 fee in most countries.

Xoom’s customer service is available to Mobile Reload senders 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, in English and Spanish.

Customers can use Xoom to recharge mobile phones in Mexico from Telcel, Movistar, Iusacel, Nextel and Unefon; recharge mobile phones in Colombia from Claro, Movistar and Virgin; recharge mobile phones in the Dominican Republic from Claro, Viva and Tricom; recharge mobile phones in Peru from Claro and Movistar; recharge mobile phones in Guatemala from Claro, Movistar and Tigo; recharge mobile phones in El Salvador from Claro, Digicel, Movistar and Tigo.

Xoom offers mobile reload to 16 Latin American and Caribbean countries:  Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Mexico, Panama, Peru, and Uruguay.

Truly Free Cell Service Plan: No Credit Card Required and No Gimmicks, Starting July 15, 2015

LOS ANGELES, July 9, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — (RingPlus): No credit card needed, no contract, no sign up fees, no monthly fees, and no other hooks you can think of!  Just a simple Truly Free cell plan is the idea.

On Wednesday, July 15, 2015, RingPlus will be the first wireless cellular carrier in the world to open such a Free Plan without any real obligation to the consumer including no need to enter their credit card information. The Truly Free Plan is exclusively available online at https://ringplus.net/ utilizing the Sprint* Nationwide Network and the Sprint Bring Your Own Device Program. It is actual cellular service which is free, and it does not rely on downloads of VoIP apps.

“The Truly Free Plan will be offered to everyone, they will not need a credit card to sign up, and there will be no hidden fees or gimmicks. The only thing you need is your own eligible cellphone and an email address,” says Karl Seelig, Founder and CEO of RingPlus.

This new Truly Free Plan will be offered July 15, 2015 with 125 minutes, 40 texts, and 10MB of 4G LTE data per month. Sign up is easy with just an email address and an eligible Bring your Own Sprint Device phone. That’s it! (Phone eligibility can be checked at https://ringplus.net/.)

The Truly Free Plan breaks through all traditional free offers and other telecom models which typically require a credit card on file, and hide the real costs from consumers with tricks such as activation costs and monthly line fees, etc.

As the old saying goes, “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.” So, how is it possible to offer free cell phone service with only a phone and an email address required? Easy. It’s ad-supported. With RingPlus you hear sponsored messages and other media content such as news and music until the person you called answers the phone. The call is not delayed. The waiting time until the party called picks up (the standard ringback tone) is merely replaced with entertaining media content.

RingPlus currently offers another Free Plan with larger allotments of talk, text, and data (200 min, 50 text, and 10MB) which is also available at https://ringplus.net/.  If the consumer chooses that free plan, they will need to signup with a credit card.

All RingPlus overages are charged at the lowest cost in the industry: 2 cents per text, minute, or MB. Higher usage plans are also offered at a lower cost than all other carriers by far at https://ringplus.net/.

About Ring Plus Inc.

RingPlus’ Media Channel plays interactive radio style content including music, news and relevant deals from sponsors to the Members during the time a Member waits for a call to be answered. Members can customize their experience by selecting from a wide range of music by genre and news stations by interests. When RingPlus Members are interested in a coupon, music, or news story, they can press five on their phone and receive a text message or an email containing a coupon or additional information, without interrupting the call.

Sponsors will have the ability to book and bid for coupon placement over RingPlus’ easy to use web interface called AdVoice where they can target different demographics and locations based on their advertising needs. Sponsor messages are in the contemporary couponing style with the added benefit of interactivity ranging from email and text message coupon delivery to call rerouting.

Martha de la Torre, Among the Top 10 Hispanic Entrepreneurs by CNBC

El Clasificado founder appears in a list published on the CNBC network website

LOS ANGELES, July 8, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The economic strength of Latinos in the United States is increasing every day, with the number of Hispanic-owned businesses currently standing at 3.1 million. A major factor contributing to this surge has been the Latin community’s important presence in key cities like Miami, Chicago and Los Angeles, where entrepreneurs have seen a golden opportunity to serve Spanish-speaking consumers.

Recognizing this increase in Hispanic entrepreneurship, the economic portion of the CNBC network’s website has published a list of the 10 most important Hispanic entrepreneurs in America, including names like Maria Contreras-Sweet, founder of ProAmerica Bank, and Tony Jimenez, founder of MicroTech.

Also in this select group is Martha de la Torre, founder of El Clasificado, an LA-based company founded in 1988, which over the years has grown exponentially thanks to its strong relations with the Latin community, not only in the LA area but also throughout the Central and Southern California market.

The company’s success has been built on an impressive print distribution of more than 500,000 weekly copies covering an area starting in San Diego and north to Bakersfield and Fresno, as well as its high-performing website, ElClasificado.com, with its 25 million monthly page views and nearly a million unique visitors.

“After supporting the community for 27 years, we are proud to be included in this list of the nation’s most successful Latin entrepreneurs,” said Martha de la Torre, as soon as she heard the news. “Our work, however, is far from finished as we will continue working diligently to create groundbreaking products to fill our market’s needs.”

Beyond El Clasificado alone, De la Torre, together with her husband and cofounder Joe Badame, managed to turn a weekly magazine of classified ads into an entire media conglomerate targeting the Latin market under the name EC Hispanic Media. From this enterprise, several niche websites and events have also emerged including SuSociodeNegocios.com and Quinceanera.com, as well as print products such as the monthly magazine El Punto and a special supplement dedicated to quinceaneras that is distributed eight times a year.

What’s more, and with the PennySaver magazine out of business, the dynamic entrepreneur recently announced the launching of yet another print product focused on the market that had now become vacant with the start of EC Classifieds, El Clasificado’s new English-language publication. EC Classifieds made its debut this week with a print-run of 95,000 copies and ecclassifieds.com.

About El Clasificado

El Clasificado is a multi-media platform with advertising solutions in print, online, and grassroots events. More than 1.5 million readers utilize the free Spanish language publication every week. El Clasificado, a verified publication with a weekly circulation of 510,000, is distributed in over 300 cities throughout Southern California and the Central Valley.
