DENVER, May 14, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Senior care provider InnovAge and Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon today launched the “Aging in Place” campaign, which educates seniors and caregivers about the resources available to help aging adults live as long as possible in their homes and communities.

“The number of adults in the U.S. aged 50 and over is expected to grow to 132 million by 20301 and we know seniors who are able to grow old in their own homes and communities are more likely to have a better quality of life,” said Maureen Hewitt, president and CEO of InnovAge. “We developed ‘Aging in Place’ to provide tools, including an online personal assessment to help identify the best ways for seniors to stay in their homes as long and as safely as possible.”

Sarandon knows first-hand the difficulties of caring for a loved one. Even with her resources, Sarandon struggled to find the best services for her 92-year-old mother Lenora. Sarandon shares her story and those of other InnovAge participants at www.InnovAgeCares.com.

“I understand the struggle of balancing the responsibility of caring for a loved one with all the other pressures of life. Finding the right living situation, support, and social opportunities for my mother has not been easy, even when there’s been family nearby,” said Sarandon. “That’s why organizations like InnovAge are so meaningful and important. The ability to access a range of services, to be flexible and have people available to you who understand the daily challenges you face, helps provide peace of mind for everyone involved.”

The “Aging in Place” website, www.InnovAgeCares.com, provides tips on caring for the elderly, webisodes hosted by Sarandon, a personal assessment to evaluate needs and an opportunity for caregivers to tell their own stories.

Seniors featured in the webisodes discuss their struggles to remain living at home and share how they found solutions to keep them healthy and safely independent, while reducing pressures on their caregiver.

The festival will present 18 select feature-length and short, fictional and factual alcohol and drug addiction themed films in 14 sessions at two locations – the New People Cinema on Post St. in San Francisco, and the Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael. The program includes one world premiere and four Bay Area premieres that highlight addiction and substance misuse as well as the hope and opportunity for recovery. There will be expert panel discussions following most of the screenings.

Alcohol Justice and Writers In Treatment are producing the event with generous support from the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department, Duffy’s Napa Valley Rehab, Center Point, Inc., West America Bank, Kaiser Permanente Community Benefits Programs – Marin/Sonoma Area, Marin County Mental Health Substance Use Services, Ghilotti Construction Company, KRON-TV, the Michael Basso Foundation, Muir Wood Adolescent and Family Services, KPOO-FM, North Bay Recovery Center, Hotel Kabuki, Book Passage Book Store, and many Bay Area individuals and families.

The festival opens at the New People Cinema on Thursday, June 11, 2015, with the premiere of a true story, Girl on the Edge, starring Peter Coyote. A post-screening Q&A will take place with Producer/Director Jay Silverman, and actors Taylor Spreitler and Mackenzie Phillips. Immediately following there will be a VIP Reception at the Hotel Kabuki with live music by singer/songwriter Elizabeth Edwards.

“The REEL Recovery Film Festival helps to bring alcoholism and addiction out of the closet,” stated Michael Scippa, festival director. “Our goal is to reduce the stigma, and raise public awareness that it is not a moral failing but a devastating disease that, like other potentially fatal diseases, requires specialized treatment.”

Do Dogs Like Hugs? Knowing the Correct Answer May Prevent a Dog Bite

0

BLOOMINGTON, Ill., May 14, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — When Hunter Keane was seven years old, he was bitten on the nose by a family dog. Now fourteen years old, Hunter and his family understand it wasn’t the dog’s fault. Like many people, they thought the way to show affection to a dog was the same way as showing love to people – by hugging and kissing them. Even though the bite didn’t break the skin, that day taught Hunter and his parents several valuable lessons but one stuck out the most.

Most dogs don’t like to be hugged.

National Dog Bite Prevention Week®, led by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), is May 17-23, 2015. State Farm and other members of the National Dog Bite Prevention Coalition have joined forces to educate adults and children about ways to reduce dog-related injuries.  While an overwhelming majority of interactions with dogs don’t result in injury, most dog bites to children could be prevented.

In 2014, State Farm paid nearly $115 million as a result of 3,500 dog-related injury claims. Over the past five years, the insurer has paid $528 million for claims resulting from accidents involving a dog. State Farm does not ask policyholders what breed of dog is owned when writing homeowner or renters insurance. The insurer is partnering with internationally renowned dog trainer Victoria Stilwell to focus on educating individuals about responsible dog ownership and safely interacting with dogs.

“I am delighted to team up with State Farm as we have a mutual goal to raise awareness about reducing dog-related injuries, while stressing the importance of pet owner responsibility”, says Stilwell. “Through my work as a dog trainer, educator and bite investigation advisor, I see all sides of the dog bite issue, but it is my role as a mother that drives me to continue educating and empowering all children with the right knowledge to keep them K-9 safe and smart.”

Children make up more than 50 percent of all dog-related injury victims. To better understand the level of knowledge about dog behavior among children, the National Dog Bite Prevention Coalition created a quiz focused on children age 5 -9. The quiz was distributed by State Farm and Prevent The Bite to schools and community organizations last month with the results indicating that the need for education about safely interacting with dogs is significant.

  • 710 children answered the dog safety quiz
  • No child answered all twelve questions correctly
  • 34% of the children indicated they had been bitten by a dog at least once
  • 50% of the children who took the Spanish translated quiz indicated they had been bitten
  • Only 33% of children correctly answered the question “does an angry dog ever wag his tail?” (the correct answer is YES)
  • Only 27% of children correctly answered the question “is a dog that is afraid as dangerous as a dog that is angry?” (the correct answer is YES)
  • Only 24% of children correctly answered the question “do dogs like to be hugged and kissed?” (the correct answer question is NO)

State Farm and members of the National Dog Bite Prevention Coalition are hosting a media conference at the National Press Club on Thursday, May 14 beginning at 9:30 AM ET. In addition to releasing the full results of the dog safety quiz, the press conference will feature young children from Maryland and Washington D.C. sharing their personal experiences with dogs. Victoria, Kathy and Kelly Voigt from Prevent The Bite, and 2013 American Humane Association Hero Dog of the Year, Elle the Pit Bull and her owner Leah Brewer will teach the kids how to correctly approach a dog.

Insurance is an important aspect to being a responsible dog owner. Talk to your insurance agent about the personal liability insurance that comes with your homeowners, renters, condominium unit owners, or manufactured home insurance and how it applies to a bite or other injury caused by your dog and for which you may be held responsible.  An important thing to remember is that most landlords do not provide coverage should there be an incident involving a dog.

Almost 4,000 submissions were received through State Farm Neighborhood Assist, a youth-led philanthropic program that empowers communities to identify issues in their neighborhoods.  At least one cause was received from every state. The State Farm Youth Advisory Board, a group of 30 students who are passionate about social responsibility, reviewed the submissions and selected the top 200 finalists based on criteria they created.

“During my time on the State Farm Youth Advisory Board, I’ve garnered a deep appreciation for the Neighborhood Assist grant program,” said Youth Advisory Board member Wesley Dixon a senior at Yale University – New Haven. “I absolutely love that this grant program removes many of the barriers individuals often face when applying for grants, through its use of a simple and accessible application.”

Once the Youth Advisory Board selected the top 200, the program connected each cause with a local nonprofit that can help solve the problem. 42 states have causes in the top 200.  The states with the most submissions in the top 200 were Arkansas (14), Maryland (12), California (10), Illinois (10) and Ohio (10).

“The State Farm Youth Advisory Board aims to review and fund grants of a diverse nature,” Dixon continued. “What’s more, the Neighborhood Assist program empowers communities and individuals to support the grant of their choice by facilitating an open voting system via Facebook.”

The 200 causes have until June 3 to rally votes and anyone voting is allowed up to 10 votes per day. On June 16, the top 40 vote-receiving causes will be announced on the Facebook app and a $25,000 grant will be awarded to the affiliated nonprofits.

“Over the past three years, it’s been great to see State Farm Neighborhood Assist grants support causes that positively impact communities across the country,” said Kellie Clapper, State Farm Assistant Vice President.  “The communities themselves can play an important role in inspiring people to rally and vote for these important causes.”

NHCLC Names United Nations and White House Liaisons to Increase Efforts on Behalf of Persecuted Church

Dr. Gus Reyes and Ricardo Luna to take on new roles

SACRAMENTO, California, May 13, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Amid increased violence toward Christians worldwide, Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference (NHCLC)/CONEL, which has a continued focus on justice and compassion for all individuals created in the Image of God, today announced the organization has named liaisons to the White House and the United Nations.

Dr. Gus Reyes, NHCLC/CONEL Chief Operating Officer and Director of the Texas Baptist’s Christian Life Commission, will serve as the official White House liaison for the organization and the deputy liaison to the United Nations. Ricardo Luna, NHCLC/CONEL Executive Director, will serve as the organization’s chief liaison to the United Nations.

“We have said before that we cannot be complacent when our brothers and sisters in Christ are being persecuted around the world,” Rodriguez said. “It is time to take action and propel proactivity on behalf of those around the world that should not and cannot do this alone.”

Recent statistics reported by Christianity Today show that worldwide levels of persecution of the Christian Church have increased, with 2014 having had the greatest number of religious freedom violations against Christians worldwide in recent memory.

“Having spent 23 years working in countries with religious persecution, religious liberty and religious equality issues, I celebrate the opportunity to create a space of global influence for the Lamb’s agenda at the United Nations,” said Luna. “I am excited to continue to work on vital issues affecting Christian believers around the world, including the emerging generation challenge.

“In order to fulfill the millennium goals of the United Nations, we must promote and invest in transformational principles and values for children around the world,” Luna added.  “An ounce of prevention is worth a millennium of cure.”

These new roles will help encourage action to fight poverty, address the emerging generation challenge, provide religious liberty, and promote the dignity of life – which are core issues of NHCLC/CONEL.

“We look forward to enhancing working relationships with leadership both at the United Nations and the White House to ensure every effort is being made on behalf of individuals being persecuted around the world for their Christian faith,” said Reyes. “The NHCLC/CONEL is committed to religious freedom, and these two new roles will further promote that commitment.”

NHCLC/CONEL is the world’s largest Hispanic Christian organization. It serves as a representative voice for the more than 100 million Hispanic Evangelicals assembled in over 40,000 U.S. churches and another 500,000 congregations spread throughout the Spanish-speaking diaspora. The organization seeks to reconcile Evangelist Billy Graham’s message of salvation through Christ with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s march of prophetic activism. A bipartisan organization, NHCLC/CONEL follows the agenda of the Lamb, not the donkey or the elephant, and emphasizes “7 Directives” of Life, Family, Compassionate Evangelism, Stewardship, Justice, Education and Youth. Held in partnership with Jamba Juice and SAP, and supported by Dannon and Sodexo, the gathering brought together leaders from diverse industries including the technology, education, financial, government, healthcare, nutrition, and sports sectors. The goal of the discussion was to generate perspectives on such vital topics as how youth empowerment is essential to driving healthy changes in schools and communities; how youth are working to advance social change; and how public/private collaboration and the involvement of business can further support the development of a healthy, high-achieving generation of empowered youth.

“In America, youth have always been at the forefront of positive social change, whether it was the adoption of seat-belt laws, the anti-smoking crusade, anti-bullying campaigns, or similar movements,” said Alexis Glick, CEO of GENYOUth. “It is our mission to enable empowered, entrepreneurial youth who will deliver to the next generation, and beyond, healthier schools, communities, and a healthier nation as a whole. Our Roundtable discussions are essential to helping develop specific calls to action and identifying support and funding in making youth empowerment possible.”

Today’s meeting included students from GENYOUth’s flagship program Fuel Up to Play 60 and its entrepreneurship program AdVenture Capital, developed in partnership with SAP. Student representatives attended and shared their successes and how programs like these have helped create meaningful and positive change in their schools and communities.  As the largest school based nutrition and fitness program, Fuel Up to Play 60 program currently engages millions of students in eating healthier and staying active and the AdVenture Capital program has helped students across the country receive grant funds to help implement their ideas.

“SAP is proud to partner with GENYOUth and provide the technology platform for Adventure Capital. Developing the entrepreneurial skills of the next generation of leaders will help shape the future of tomorrow – and business has to make this a priority,” said Jen Morgan, president SAP North America. “Adventure Capital is helping students turn their health and wellness ideas into reality and create meaningful programs that have a real impact on their communities.”

Added Jamba Juice CEO James White, “Jamba Juice is committed to the health and wellness of youth and the communities we serve.  This Roundtable enables us to convene with like-minded corporate, philanthropic and other partners to ideate and build programs that continue to drive our unified visions of a healthy, empowered generation of youth.”

NEW YORK, May 13, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Some of the most beautiful Latin artists came together last night as People en Espanol hosted their annual Los 50 Mas Bellos event in New York City’s IAC Building.  The 2015 Toyota Camry joined the action at the star-studded event in a very unique way.   While guests enjoyed an art installation highlighting the Camry, one of the evening’s special guests and 50 Most Beautiful stars, Cuban actor, William Levy, donned a specially designed leather jacket featuring the same leather material and bold red stitching that can be found in the 2015 Toyota Camry.

The jacket was designed and styled by Kathy Kopp, Miami based Colombian designer and stylist to many recognized stars including Shakira, and made with the leather used in the vehicle’s seats and accentuated with red stitching.  The designer was inspired by the bold and distinctive design of the Camry that lead to the idea of a uniquely crafted jacket.  In partnership with Toyota, William Levy wore the jacket to make an exclusively bold and distinctive fashion statement that evening.

“This event is one of our long-standing sponsorships that allows us to connect to many of today’s Latino artists and stars in the community.  This year, we wanted to shine the spotlight on the 2015 Camry by highlighting the versatility and luxury of the material you can find in this latest model,” said Jack Hollis, group vice president of marketing at Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

Another one of the 50 Most Beautiful stars, singer Becky G., joined Toyota to give followers an inside look at the red carpet action that evening.  She shared messages and video on @ToyotaLatino and Facebook channels.

Other Toyota sponsored activations for the event included the ever popular “Elije tu Bello” contest, which garnered more than a million fan votes online and People en Espanol’s new “Bellos Unplugged” video series.  The video series provides readers exclusive behind the scenes photos, beauty tips and interviews with some of their favorite 50 Most Beautiful celebrities on the People en Espanol portal.  For more on the Bellos issue and highlights from Toyota at the event visit peopleenespanol.com and www.facebook.com/ToyotaLatino.
