Populus Successfully Delivers the National Health Information System for the Government of Barbados On Time and On Budget

FREDERICTON, New Brunswick, Feb. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — Populus Global Solutions Inc., a New Brunswick, Canada-based company, is pleased to report that the Government of Barbados has launched its new National Health Information System using the Populus technology.

“In an instant, an individual’s medical history, latest blood test and investigations like X-rays, can be seen by attending physicians and assessed, thereby reducing duplication of effort and creating a more efficient and timely system,” the Honourable John Boyce, Minister of Health for Barbados, said in a statement, “the system has the potential to reduce inefficiencies including doctor shopping, out-of-stock drugs and medical supplies and lengthy waiting times for patient care. The seamless movement of information in a secure interface allows for faster decision-making and improved record keeping.”

The MedData System, as it is called in Barbados, gives doctors, nurses and other authorized medical personnel in the public health system easy access to the medical data of patients. All district hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, and polyclinics will have the system in operation by the end of March 2016. The Minister also envisions private sector doctors interfacing with the system in the near future.

“The entire system was implemented in less than 10 months, on-time and on-budget,” says Tristan Rutter, CEO of Populus Global “the total project cost was US$1.7 million and was financed with the support of the World Bank who recognizes Populus as a global leader in health information systems.”

The Populus system provides a single electronic medical record for every Barbadian that is in the public health network. The Populus system electronically ties together all of the doctors, hospitals, clinics and pharmacies in the island nation. It provides an electronic prescription network, an inventory control module, maternal newborn child health, public health, and disease management (chronic and infectious) with a longitudinal patient record while providing the Health Department with comprehensive management data.

“Better patient care at lower costs is our mission,” says Rutter, “the Populus team was able to successfully implement the National Health System for Barbados on such a tight schedule and at the contracted costs because of our experience in running the national health system for the country of Belize as well as others.”

The Populus system was first implemented for the National Health System of Belize in 2007. The Populus health system is constantly upgraded and currently manages some one million transactions every day through a seamless and secure interface that allows for faster decision making, improved record keeping and better patient care. The integrated product was described as the most comprehensive in the world by a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation report.”

Major accomplishments for the project are: a governance structure has been established and is operational; capacity building, training, subject matter expert engagement has been strong; workflow studies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) creation; software configuration delivery and acceptance; installation on production hardware; the training of end users in the utilization of software; and imported multiple years of legacy and health data to facilitate a smooth transition for both patients and providers. The software is in use.

About Populus Global Solutions: Populus is a Fredericton based company. After three decades of relentless process improvement, visionary health sector reform, and delivering four of the world’s six fully integrated national Healthcare Information Systems (HIS), Populus technology is now universally recognized as a pillar of reform in healthcare information systems the world over.

Discovery en Espanol Exposes the Dangerous Underworld Along the Border Between Colombia and Venezuela

The investigative documentary “La frontera mas caliente: Colombia-Venezuela” takes an in-depth look at the causes and consequences of the contraband economy that dominates the region

MIAMI, Feb. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The border between Colombia and Venezuela is home to some of the world’s richest oil and gas reserves. But it is also a region wracked by violence, contraband and armed groups vying to control the territory. The original production LA FRONTERA MAS CALIENTE: COLOMBIA-VENEZUELA, premiering Sunday, February 15 at 10PM E/P, takes an up-close look at this tumultuous region, exposing its hidden dangers.

Filmed in both countries, the documentary uncovers the “modus operandi” and illegal routes traffickers use to move gasoline, food and currency into Colombia. North of the border in La Guajira department, Discovery en Espanol’s camera crew traveled alongside a contraband trader transporting more than 1,000 gallons of Venezuelan gasoline to the Colombian city of Maicao.  His is a profitable but perilous business that involves evading the authorities and paying large sums of money at checkpoints controlled by Colombia’s ELN and FARC guerrillas.

LA FRONTERA MAS CALIENTE: COLOMBIA-VENEZUELA shows a reality in which local residents rub shoulders with traffickers, paramilitary and guerrilla groups, and common criminals in a common quest to profit from the lucrative contraband trade.  The border region is also an irresistible target for attacks and extortion by guerrillas and paramilitaries alike, with more than 3,500 people reported missing from the area in recent years.

In addition to La Guajira, Discovery en Espanol’s production team visited the Colombian departments of North Santander and Arauca, and Tachira state in Venezuela for exclusive interviews with political analysts, customs agents, navy officials, relatives of the disappeared, and representatives of such foundations as “Paz y Reconciliacion” and “Progresar” to examine the complicated dynamics of the border region.

LA FRONTERA MAS CALIENTE: COLOMBIA-VENEZUELA is a coproduction by Discovery en Espanol and Caracol Television under the supervision of Michela Giorelli, Discovery’s Vice President for content and production; with the assistance of Pacha Films, under the direction of Luis del Valle.

Nutrition and Calorie Labeling: Important Information for a Healthy Heart

Nutrition and Calorie Labeling: Important Information for a Healthy Heart

SILVER SPRING, Md., Feb. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — February is American Heart Month. Cardiovascular disease — including heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure — is the leading cause of death among both men and women in the United States. That’s why it’s important to protect your heart health not only this month, but throughout your lifetime.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a simple tool called the Nutrition Facts Label, and it can help you make heart-healthy dietary choices in February and every day throughout the year. The Nutrition Facts Label is found on packaged foods and beverages. It lets you see exactly what you’re eating and how a particular food (and the nutrients it contains) fits into your daily diet.  Use it to compare foods and make choices that can affect your long-term health!

Get Less of Certain Nutrients

The Nutrition Facts Label helps you track specific nutrients that can have an impact on heart health. The Percent Daily Value (%DV) information shown on the Nutrition Facts Label gives a framework for deciding if a food is high or low in specific nutrients – including the ones you are trying to limit.

To help reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease, compare nutrients and choose foods with a lower %DV of sodium, saturated fat, and cholesterol, and try to stay below 100% DV for these nutrients every day.  Use this general guideline when comparing nutrients in food:

  • 5% DV or less per serving of a particular nutrient is low
  • 20% DV or more per serving of a particular nutrient is high

And remember, the %DV listed is for one serving, but many packages contain more than one serving! So, look at the serving size and how many servings you are actually consuming.

Monitor Calories

The Nutrition Facts Label tells you the number of calories in a serving of food. When it comes to managing your weight, it’s important to balance the number of calories you consume with the number of calories your body uses (“burns”).  Excess body weight can contribute to cardiovascular disease as well as other chronic diseases, so use the Label to compare calories and select the foods that have fewer calories per serving. This simple tip will help you size up calories when comparing and choosing foods:

  • 100 calories per serving is MODERATE
  • 400 calories per serving is HIGH

Texas home sales growth spikes in fourth quarter, makes 2014 the second-best year ever for Texas real estate

0

AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ — The Texas housing market closed out 2014 with one of the highest fourth-quarter single-family home sales volumes in Texas real estate history, according to the 2014-Q4 Texas Quarterly Housing Report released today by the Texas Association of Realtors. Ending a year-long trend of flat annual home sales growth, the year-end increase in home sales made 2014 the second-best year ever for Texas real estate.

“While many local Texas markets saw dips in home sales volume throughout 2014, the statewide housing market continued to grow year-over-year,” said Scott Kesner, chairman of the Texas Association of Realtors. “The fourth quarter of 2014 marked three-and-a-half years of continual home sales growth for the Lone Star State and the highest annual home sales volume since 2006 – a testament to the strong and enduring demand of Texas real estate.”

According to the 2014-Q4 Texas Quarterly Housing Report, 66,664 single-family homes were sold in Texas in the fourth quarter of 2014, an 8.46 percent increase from the same quarter of 2013. This is significantly higher than the zero percent to two percent year-over-year increases in single-family home sales seen throughout the first three quarters of 2014.

Jim Gaines, Ph.D., economist with the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University, explained, “A dip in mortgage interest rates below four percent in the last half of 2014 created an ideal climate for this year-end surge in home sales growth. However, fewer homes on the market and strong demand maintained rising home prices and shrinking months inventory.”

Texas home prices continued to climb year-over-year in Q4-2014, but at a slower pace than the nearly 10 percent annual increases seen throughout the last two years. In 2014-Q4, the median price for Texas homes was $185,900, a 7.76 percent increase from 2013-Q4, and the average price increased 6.99 percent to $240,976.

The second half of 2014 saw an end to the double-digit quarterly drops in housing inventory that have occurred since summer 2011, but still did not prevent Texas housing inventory from hitting an all-time low of 3.3 months in 2014-Q4, a decrease of 8.33 percent from one year prior. That figure is nearly half the 6.5 months that the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University cites as a market balanced between supply and demand.

“Texas home sales in the first half of 2015 are expected to be similar to what we’ve seen in 2014, but continued increases in home prices and record-low inventory levels should still continue,” cautioned Gaines. “Historically, Texas home prices have only risen 4.5 percent year-over-year. Continued housing demand, especially in Texas’ metro areas, will be critical to sustaining our market’s strong housing development in 2015.”

Chairman Kesner concluded, “Several issues affecting Texas homeowners, including property taxes and transportation, are expected to be important topics in the current legislative session. Texas Realtors will continue to work with the 84th Texas Legislature to protect the rights of private property owners and move toward infrastructure that can sustain our state’s continued growth.”

About the Texas Quarterly Housing Report
Data for the Texas Quarterly Housing Report is analyzed by the Real Estate Center at Texas A&M University using statistics compiled from multiple listing services in nearly 50 markets throughout Texas. The report includes data for single-family home sales over the course of one quarter and is scheduled for release by the Texas Association of Realtors on the following dates each year (or the next business day): Feb. 1, May 1, Aug. 1 and Nov. 1.
